Twin's Wideside mod......205 on a stock rim!
We now have other options for a Darksiding our stock 1300 and rim. We were limited on our options to the just brands of the 165's.
I installed a 205/65/15 Douglas rain and snow tire. My friend hick gave me the new name for it...."the Wideside". I will be posting pics come Monday. Right now you just need to take my word for it.
I will be posting how I did it. There is a trick to getting it on. So stay tuned.
Edit*************************************************
Here are the new pics.
I love this shot of the 205...really fills out the fender and whole swing arm area!
Here you will see that it misses the swingarm by 3/4".

Re: Twin's Wideside mod......205 on a stock rim!
Alright...here's the Major Headlines for Saturday Jan. 5th on the Douglas 205/65/15. It is "ON" and talk about nice looking. I bought it from Wallyworld for $64.00 w/tax at 8:15 this morning and mounted it shortly after that.
*******************It's NOT a V or Z rated tire, it's a snow and rain tire.*************************************
Plus the cooking oil did the trick. It went on about 80 psi. Now here's where the trick that I learned. You cannot just put the oil on the bead and the rim!!!!! You have to lather it on all the way to 1/3 of the side wall of the tire. The first try, we only did the bead and rim....and NO go, because the some of the side wall was on the rim, So we broke it down and rubbed it down like explained above and POP......POP at about 80 psi! We have a stock 1300 rim with a 205!!!!!!!!!
Now twin has a wideside and a darkside............hehehehe

Hej!
A reply to my earlier post on this site - Which size(s) - suggested staying with the 165 for a newbie. Is this still the preferred size given the 165 is on the way out and there is a 205 that will fit (hopefully the
07 1300R as well)? I checked my Local Wallyworld and did not see a Douglass tire listed at all.
Cheers!

Here's the link to Wallyworld and Douglas tires. If not, try a local distributor.

I said the pics are coming!!!!! Phil, give me a break!....hehehehe
Don't feel bad, I got a brand new 165 un-mounted also sitting at the house waiting for this other 165 to ever wear out!. Hey, you should have tried it when you first thought about going darkside instead of waiting, that way you could have at least tried to even scuff the 165! Hopefully we can still sell them, hey don't count out the 165's....they are still awesome tires.

Right off the bat, I only got about 8 miles on it...Had a family wedding today, so I only had time to buy it, get it mounted, and get home.
But it handles different going into the turns a lot slower and when you counter steer riding straight down the road, it's not as quick as with the 165. I feels a little more solid, if that's a term to use. Let me get the mold release off and a few more riding days, I should be able to tell you guys more.
Not just trying to sell you a 165, but I think smokey will tell you the same thing...you should try the 165 first. JMO! It's a good tire to learn on. I always said, you could have the one I had any way when ebony needed a darkside.

Re: Twin's Wideside mod......205 on a stock rim!
So, here's an update on the 205 Darkside....
Caution....the vegetable oil is slick. Be sure you have a mild de-greaser handy to wash the tire after you mount it. Because of lathering the cooking oil without hesitation all over the tire it will get on the side wall and tread. YOU NEED TO GET THIS OFF BEFORE YOU TAKE IT FOR A SPIN!!!!!
It took 15 mg's of weight which is nothing to balance it. That's good I thought.
The recommended air pressure is 35 psi. I put that in and it rode fantastic.

Yep. I wanna know if any old 205/65/15 will work too!!! I've been contemplating the foots mod, but I don't really wanna drop the dough since I'm about to start med school. A 205 would do it for me without the monetary issues. AND PICS!!!!!

Tenn and DocRawk,
Here's what I did to make sure mine would fit. I measured the tire at rest in the store to make sure that outside to outside at the bead was close to 5" or less. If the tire is open wider for maybe a 7-8" rim then, it will NOT fit! Take you a tape measure with you and measure them to get the closest to 4" which is what our stock 1300 rims are measured at. The Douglas measured at 4 1/2" at rest and that's why I chose it.
I hope this answers you questions... Now, I was just trying it on my own from a rumor I heard, because my 165 was even ready to be changed yet. I am just trying to help everyone by trying it first. So as you guys find brands that work, let us know and we will put some data together to help others. With all mods come some kind of risk that it will not work. So, do your homework and give us the data.

I think this 205 should last maybe two years...my 165 last over a year and 3 months.

Dam that looks like you could take it off road and compete with those duo-sport bikes!twin1300 wrote:We now have other options for a Darkside on the stock 1300 rims. We used to have limited options to the just brands of the 165's.

Re: Twin's Wideside mod......205 on a stock rim!
Michael,
Well, it will NOT hydroplane...that's for sure. I daily ride and get caught in the rain all the time, so I got the tire rated for what I need. That tread pattern has served me well in the past with my other darksides and I haven't ever had it slip on asphalt or hill climbing...
I watched my friend at lunch ride it around the parking lot and man, that thing looks bad and you don't notice the treads with it moving.
