Tail of the Dragon? Empty Tail of the Dragon?

Post  Ice Cold Sun Jul 26, 2009 9:38 pm

Has anyone rode the Tail of the Dragon on a car tire? If so, any Pics for us to see! I am that close to converting over. I will be going to the 11 mile 318 curves Tail of the Dragon at the end of August and I was thinking of trying the CT out on it! Any info would be helpful!

Thanks in a big way!

Here's what I came up with searching KillBoys blog:

Tail of the Dragon? Img_0224

There are more, those are just a couple easy finds. The subject isn't quite so heated in the blog comments as elsewhere.

I don't have any pics, but can tell you that I have ridden it both ways and the CT was much more enjoyable.

SmokinJoevrcc rides the dragon regularly with a darkside on his valkyrie, and I mean he rides the piss out of it.
I have done the dragon on mine as well. If you ride your bike like it's meant to be ridden then by all means jump on the dragons back.

Ice Cold,
I live in the dragon's backyard. I have ridden it more times than I can count on two hands. When it is time for you to experience the Dragon, grasshopper, if it's on the weekend, call me and I'll escort you thru it. I work 1st shift and get off at 1500, during the week. My advice to you, as a 1st timer, is to do it during the week. Week-ends are crazy with all that goes with it. I'll be coming back from vacation on the 23rd of August. If your gonna do the DT after that, let me know on this board and we'll make plans to join you and exchange ph. #'s. Semper-fi Mike
P.S. That invite is extended to any others who are planning to ride the DT at anytime.

Tail of the Dragon? Empty Tail of the Dragon!

Post  Ice Cold Mon Jul 27, 2009 10:49 pm

Smokey,
That sounds great! I will be riding along with my sister and her husband. I will run this by them and see what they have to say. They're the ones who had invited me so it is their gig. With that being said, they have never ridden the Dragon either so maybe they might think this would be a great idea as well.

I have seen some UTube videos and some more Pics of the Dragon and this includes accidents also. I am trying to prepare myself for anything that could and might just happen on my first run. So in my opinion, I would think it would be wise to be open to any suggestions as well as a possible escort.

Thank you all again for all the replies and the Pics too! Please do not hesitate adding anymore Pics or giving out anymore suggestion on riding on the Dark Side!

Today I had asked three people if they would convert the tire over to a CT. One said they never heard of it, but would give it a try. But I would have to remove the tire. The other who does inspections and works on bikes said he would not and spoke as he has some knowledge about a CT but he also came off as if he wanted to know more! The other person handed me a business card and said call us tomorrow and ask for the boss! So I am still searching to feel out the right person to do the converting of the CT. Inspection is on the 4th of this August and after this date I am seriously hoping to fine someone whom I can trust to get the job done right!

Hope to post some pics after the conversion! Thank you all again!

Being your first time on the dragon I also suggest riding it during the weekend. It gets crazier on the weekends.
Don't call and talk to the boss, go in and talk to him. if you have to, point him to this forum. Education is key.

See you out there

My dad and I rode the Dragon a couple weeks ago. On the way home we rode a wet, twisty section of NC 80. I cruised through scraping pegs with no problem, and his bike tire slipped several times.

I ride The Dragon all the time and all three of my Valkyrie's have car tires . I've pushed crotch rockets through The Dragon I run a soft compound directional summer tire don't know about pushing the limit with a tire Grandma runs on her Buick. Pictures taken on US 129 The Dragon.

Hey folks. New to the forum. Own a honda sabre and considering a CT. A friend and I will be heading up that way from Myrtle Beach next week. This will be my first feel on the sabre on the dragon. After that, I'll be replacing my tire and hope I have a chance before cooler weather to get back up there.
Funny to see the pictures of the riders leaning the wrong way on those big bikes. My friend John just picked up a vid camera so, we'll see how my reactions will be in a lean. I know it's hard to lean with the bike on these bigger rides..
Later folks.

Darmie, do yourself a favor and put the car tire on before you head out. You will not regret it at all.

Make sure you put a few hundred miles on the tire before heading to the the DT, you'll need to get use to the different "feel" of the ct before hitting all those curves.

He's not leaning the wrong way, the dragon has tons of switchbacks, you'll have to flick right left right left, doubt that you'll get out of 2nd gear. Max speed limit is 35 and Tenn state troopers will pull you..

I believe you'll like the dragon, good luck
