Looks like the result of an under inflated tire and or a old one. Don't think that a MC won't do the same thing because it will, as will any tire. low pressure creates heat and breaks the belts, happens all the time, ever notice the road gators? That is why you must check your pressure regularly and the age of your tires especially on a bike no matter what kind of tire you run.

I personally don't like Dunlop tires or cooper tires , and Dunlop 3D wintersport is one of them. Now I'M not say'n that the GYTT or a Michelin will not fail when under inflated , but I had a set of dunlap tires on a horse trailer and all four failed within a week of each other the tire shop that sold them to me said that it was a defect and gave me new tires from bf goodrich.

Fools rush in. Definately underinflated.
All I can say is,,, Um,,, Duh.

This post is either good to know if you run a flat tire, or someone just starting sh!t.

Just sayin

I think it's also pretty obvious that the owner never checked the condition of his tire after it was mounted. There would have been signs of wear before that kind of failure occurred.

Check your tire tread and air pressure regularly and I can't see that happening to you.

notice that in the video the back side of the tire is never shown. this could have been a clearance issue. along with improper inflation. the drive shaft rubbing on the side of the tire could also have cause this type of failure... griz

Why i havent gone darkside yet Empty Tire failure

Post  starider Sun Aug 23, 2009 6:20 pm

Since we dont know the conditions or the mileage of the tire upon failure we cant make a intelligent assumption as to weather a bad thing happened here or who's to blame.
Motorcycling can be a dangerous sport. A higher level of maintenance must be observed in order to keep us as safe as possible at ALL times. Carefull examination of our bike before riding on lengthy trips is a MUST. If one ignores this attitude then Cool we are the blame for situations such as this one. You cant blame the equipment if it's ignored.

I have been noticing more stories and pics about the Run On Flat (ROF) tires.

The cause is usually a nail or something punctures the tire. If you do not check your tire every 50 miles or so this could actually happen to anyone with these tires. The reasoning is that the driver may not realize that the tire has been punctured. So say you got a nail in the parking lot after filling up with gas and were going on a 100 mile ride... Run flat tires could spell disaster.

When they are run underinflated or flat the sidewall will eventually fail and the tire will come apart. Sometimes from the inside out! Casual inspection may not work with a ROF tire. Only a pressure check will tell you for certain if you have issues.

I tried to get the most reliable tire for my bike. Because of these kind of events I chose a tire that looks flat when flat and feels flat when flat. (i.e. I will not use ROF tires on my bike)
I might have a different stance on the issue if I had a tire pressure monitor on my bike.

Why i havent gone darkside yet Empty Flat Tire

Post  starider Mon Aug 24, 2009 7:30 am

Off hand I'd say the tire didnt have enough air in it when he went for the ride.
I've seen cars with low profile tires blow just like this one due to not enough air in them. Goldwings have become sport/cruisers and no longer just a touring bike. They are great handling machines and weigh close to 1000 pounds or more when fully loaded. Low tire pressure is bad. So is falling off your bike. Cool
