New Crap-Mod. - My Custom Lowers Empty New Crap-Mod. - My Custom Lowers

Post  DS-Wing-Nut Sat Apr 19, 2008 8:47 pm

I already had a set of Memphis Fats Lowers to go with the Windshield. I really liked them but I was still getting wind and buffeting where I didn't want it. So, I experimented while riding and moving the lowers around but in the end found that the size of these lowers was entirely too small for my taste. So, off to Lowe's I go. Pick up some Lucite that is almost 1/4" thick. Very close if not the same as my original lowers. I didn't want to have to make any new hardware connections as I really like the ones that Memphis provides. I made a pattern, well actually 4 coroplast (plastic cardboard) patterns untill I got one that I really liked. Then I went into the shop and drew the pattern on the 1/2" particle board pattern on the band saw and then scroll saw and then sanded it to final measurements and smoothness. Cut the Lucite to size. I have a router table and mounted the trim bit with bearing.
I used double stick tape and mounted my pattern to one of the pieces of lucite (with the protective layer still on). Used the router to cut the lowers. WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!! I got two exact copies. Removed the old lowers and the mounting hardware. Drilled holes and inserted the rubber bushings and put it all back together! Took her for a ride and out on the highway! WOW... what a MAJOR difference. I love them. I got it up to 80 and had very little wind whatsoever. I'm a very happy camper. They are big, a little wider and alot longer. But I don't think they look that bad?? What say you guys?! I know some will like them and some will not.. That's OK.

Here are some pics...

Nice mod Dave! Save that pattern. I have a clear memphis shad windshield. I'd like to try a set of these lowers with that to see how it does. Especially when it's bug season.

See you on the 30th.

I hate it ...... cause I don't have a set yet Laughing After this weekend and fighting the wind at interstate speeds I know I need to get me a set. I really like the looks of those. They are long enough and strong enough to do you some good and to keep the wind off you. Very well done.

See you out there
