CT on a honda shadow
I have a honda shadow spirit. Last year I purchased a radial tube and a CT. The tire wouldn't seat even though it was aired to 100 psi. Is there a trick to get it to seat on my bike.
I have a 180x80 MC tire on it now, would a 165 CT be about the same size?

You have a 750 or 1100? 750s have spoke rims on the back, right? If so, you will have to use a tube or seal the rim. Not sure we have had anyone seat a car tire on a 750, but it can be done.

If it were me... I think I would try the sealing the rim route and getting rid of the tube.

Try this link......... https://mcdarksiders.forumotion.com/vtx-1300-tech-f11/i-got-it-done-am-i-the-first-t1377.htm
The 165R15 or 165/80/15 should fit right up. Be sure you use sprayon furniture polish or some slick cooking oil and put it all the way up to the lettering so it will bead.
Remember, this is a risky job mounting a tire. The above link is someone who mounted his and other have put 100 psi on them and left them in the sun! Observe all safety practices and DO NOT STAND NEXT TO A BEADING TIRE WHILE IT IS TRYING TO SEAT!

Re: CT on a honda shadow
My first two ct took 110 and 115 to seat the bead, 10lbs makes a big diff. but I wasnt useing a tube.
Enter at your own risk.
The tubeless I beleave, puts press. all the way aroun more evenly, whereas the tube dont. This is just what I think could be going on with the tube. But I have been wrong before, Just once

Re: CT on a honda shadow
Since I have a 180 MT on it now. Would the 165 CT be the same width? Is this the largest tire I should try?

Yes, because the 165/80/15 is a tiny bit narrower than the stock dunnie! It looks wider because of the larger contact patch of the footprint. All other sizes come just a little too short in height.

It looks shorter. Is it because the MT is mounted?

Re: CT on a honda shadow
Seating/beading is always the tricky part. You have to air it up to 100psi sometimes. The 165s are a good tire. Kumho seated nicely. Look in the 1100 section for how Dave and I did it. There is a complete how to with pictures. tire brands and sizes are there too.

It's about 1/4" shorter in height. But it's the closet you can get with a car tire. You will not be disappointed because it will out handle, out last, and out perform any motorcycle tire. I know, I put it thru the ringer on my 1300.....burnouts at least 3 or 4 a month.
And that didn't wear it out. I had 15,000 on mine and 1/4 or the tread left and put the 205 for a change of scenery.

Re: CT on a honda shadow
I guess the next size up a 175 (if they make one) or a 185 is to big.

Re: CT on a honda shadow
I wouldn't worry about height too much. Width is the main concern. And sealing your rim or going with a tube is a close 2d.
I have a 165 on mine and it's just fine. I looked for a 175, 185, etc, but could not find one in stock here in town. The 205s are in stock and will fit. Darkside Shadow has one on his bike. I hve one in the garage that I'm going to put on as soon as this one wears out, which might be awhile. We tried to put the 205 on. it would fit, just couldn't get it to bead in February. We think we'll have better luck when it's hot. But I'm in no hurry. The Kumho 165 rides great and has a lot of tread left.

My rim is 3.5 inches. If I wanted to go a little wider than a 165 which one would you all reccomend?

Re: CT on a honda shadow
Awesome inquiries dirtwarrior. Read the Honda Shadow 1100 forum for all we've done so far.
I have the 165 installed and I love it. It did not drop the motorcycle at all. I made sure of that because I drive a lot of dirt roads with potholes, and I didn't want to lower it at all. A 165-80-15 would be the closest thing to a direct swap to a car tire.
Now ... the question you need to ask yourself is "Do I want to get a car tire that will be the same width as my MC tire, or Do I want to go for a ballsy look at get a wider one?". Look at the picture on Darkside Shadows avatar. That my friend, is a 205. They fit great into our bikes, and look AWESOME!!! Check that other forum for the details on how Darkside Shadow led the charge into that realm.
Steve-O, Darksides Shadow and myself all have 1100's, which means we have mag wheels. I'm not sure how to go about mounting the spoke wheels. I've heard sealing is awesome, but people have had success with the tubes in.
My 165 mounted with moly grease (don't use this if you don't have to) and 105 lbs pressure. It was dead winter when I did it, so I didn't quite get the flexibility that you will get now in summer.
Head on over to the other forum, and I'm sure we've answered almost anything you need to know. If you find something you still need addressed, just ask. That's what we're here for.

Re: CT on a honda shadow
Also ... I think I need to correct Steve-O.
The new rear tire should not affect your speedo at all. Most speedometers are measured through the front tire. You could change the rear tire to a wagon wheel and it wouldn't affect the speedometer. (lets see someone try that one. LOL).

Just so you know ... the honda shadow forum is actually named "Honda VT-1100" under the homepage. That is where we keep all our dirty little secrets. LOL.

Re: CT on a honda shadow
my speedo is off by exactly 5 mph.. but it's not due to the tire it is due to the Japanese bike... You can find this information about all of the japanese bikes, that they are off by a certain percentage. I think it has something to do with the KMH to MPH conversion maybe??? But I do know mine is off by exactly 5MPH. SO if I'm going 70 showing on my speedo I'm actually only going 65.
Confirmed by 2 GPS' and one radar gun.
