Re: Brake Pads
Depends on the rider, some get 22,000+ out of the rears some get 7,000. Depends how you use your brakes. I replaced mine at 21k may still have had a couple k left on them but went with the foots mod so had to change. They have squealers like a car does but check the regular anyway.
Easy to do just look at the gap between the rotor and metal of the pad. About an 1/8th inch replace them. 25 bucks to save you several hundred if you tear up a rotor. Not to mention the hurt you could put on yourself not stopping when needed.

Re: Brake Pads
I still have tons of pad left on both ends at 14,000 or so(equal wear too) but maybe that's cause I never stop.
Seriously though, where I live and ride I usually use my brakes once or twice for every 50 miles ridden if that. Sometimes I ride for several hundred miles and only use the brakes to stop for more gas. Gotta love living in the middle of nowhere. I don't ride in town much and when I do it's one stop sign between me and the far side of town (.9 miles away)
