I just traded a suzuki bandit for my 1997 shadow spirit because I missed the shadow so much. My question is I like to sit higher up, so wondered what size tire gives more height. My former tire, altimax 205 was great and could go back to that, but just wondered what tire option for height would be that is a tried a true tire. The middle number represents the tire height I think, so a 65 that I had before is pretty low I assume. Also don't want to increase rpms!Former tire had 55k mile warranty which was great. Could be asking too much.thanks!

A 70 series will get you about a half inch taller. A75 series could get you some fender rubbing.

I did some calculating one time and the height difference was pretty negligible.
Plus you can't get just any size tire. They may be listed, but not in stock.
On the 1100 spirit you have plenty of fender clearance, left, right, up, down.....
You have choices of 205, 195, 185, 165...not sure I ever found a 175
The middle number is the real limiter. Most of the widths above come in just a few heights.
Again, when I did the math awhile back the range of size was neglible.....PLUS when I put some tires side by side the "Theoretical Height" did not match reality.

The middle number is merely the percentage of the tire's height from inside hole to outside edge, to it's width. A 175 / 75 /16 tire, has 70% as much height from it's center hole to the outside edge.
Therefore, the tire's tread is 175 mm wide, 122.5 mm from the center hole to the tread, and the hole is 16 inches. I often wonder why the tread is measured in mm and the center hole in inches.

Jerry, do you mean taller than the altimax I assume? Since the stock middle number is 80, I would want at least 80 to be taller, correct?

The middle number is an aspect ratio of the tires width... A 175/80 is a "shorter" tire than a 205/70.

So how does the stock compare with the atimax I had with respect to the height? I think stock is 170-80-15.I want a taller tire without affection rpms increasing much. I'm not too good with numbers. Embarassed thanks

Love that Jerry! Thanks for the link.I like the effects of the 205-70-15. Gives it a bit longer legs.

I've been on the Altimax 205 65 15 and love everything about it, but like you, would like to try the 205 70 15 on my next one. I don't think General makes the Altimax in this size but Goodyear Triple Tread was available when I checked several months ago. It should bead up with less pressure and I know of some other Shadow 1100's using the 205 70.(can't remember which one thought) You might want check the Dark Side log to verify this.

Post  Ron Bratcher Sun Oct 03, 2010 9:37 pm

Thanks Maurice,
I Wonder what the difference is between the RT and the HP? I've got alot more miles left in my 205 65 15 HP but plan to go with the 70 on the next one. Please post your results if you go with the 70.

when I had thought about going to the 205-70-15this is the Tire I was going to get.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=Grabber+UHP&partnum=07HR5GRUHP

I ended up going with the 205-65-15 in this:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=Altimax+HP&partnum=065HR5AMAXHP&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

I wanted to stay with the H speed rating (putting a Car tire on a Bike) Thought I might NEED it. Laughing
Never have NEEDED that Speed Rating but it is there!!! Very Happy

Sure will Ron as I plan on ordering this Friday, maybe have it installed the following weekend. The hp has a 55k warranty, so I'm going with the higher mileage tire. With 70k warranty, even if they are off by 20k, 50k still isn't too bad!
