Re: ATTENTION...DarkSide Rally ...April 23-24-25
Thanks Joe, I got the Hotel info. from the other thread. I will call them before the end of the week and reserve a room. A single would be just fine at that rate.
Really hoping I can get the bike there and tear up some twisties with ya!!!
I have driven the truck through the Knoxville area many times, what a beautifull place to live and ride. It is on my top five places to have a second winter home for the times that I stay South and work.
My wife moved out and left me recently so not coming home and staying south for extended periods of time during the winter months here just became a non issue. Before I had to come home to her. No More mandatory home and a lot more mandatory riding!!!
See Ya soon.

Just got in my new helmet camera from Oregon Scientific ATC5K for the Rally to take movies of us riding together! I will take some vids later and then post them. I started playing with this morning at work and still learning the camera. Looks like it will work great and it's waterproof so riding in wet weather in not an issue.

Yeah I've heard Aug or Sept before they get it reopened.....We can still do a great ride and even go to Deals Gap ...The Dragon is closed at the Tennessee / North Carolina state line and down at the lake.Cherohala Skyline , Bald River Falls , The Hellbender , Little River Road , The Foothills Parkway <---All these are still open and all great roads for motorcycling. I've heard the photographer's have moved over and doing shots from The Hellbender now.

Re: ATTENTION...DarkSide Rally ...April 23-24-25
You aint going to believe this!!!!!
I sent 6 emails today 1 to each governor of TN and NC, 1 each to Senator of each state, 1 each to the Representative of said states. Within 10 minutes I received a phone call from the governors office of NC and talked to a very nice man who discussed all the issues with the Dragon and asked me what state I was from and understood my plight of making a trip to his state and not being able to ride the Dragon.
He said that there was a meeting tomorrow at 10:00 am tomorrow with both states DOTD and the leadership of Robbinsville and see if it possible to have it open in two weeks! He said there are two more roads closed between NC and TN and they are going to discuss them also.
Awesome phone call and amazing response to an email. I'm impressed.

'The Dragon' closure costly for business owners
Posted: Mar 25, 2010 10:14 PM EDT
MARYVILLE (WATE) - A section of U.S. 129 known as "The Dragon" is closed after a rockslide and it has business owners in two counties worried about loss of revenue.
The road got its nickname for its curviness, resembling the tail of a dragon. It attracts motorcycle riders and sports car drivers from around the world.
Officials with the state Department of Transportation say it will be closed until the end of July so crews can clean up the rockslide that happened earlier in March.
The work is expected to begin in early April.
Business owners say that will cost Blount and Monroe county millions in lost business this spring and summer.
The Punkin Center Motorcycle Resort makes its money from being located next to the Dragon. "Fifty feet outside the door here is the main intersection in the United States for motorcycles and sports car drivers," says Jody Montgomery, who helps his wife run the business.
He says usually, they would be getting ready to sell 5,000 T-shirts a week and welcome guests into their motel.
Instead, it's quite the opposite. "We had a group from Sweden flying in their motorcycles and all that. They were going to stay the month of April, just had to return their stuff because they had to cancel," Montgomery says.
He says they had to refund the group more than $7,000. But that's just a small dent compared to the hit his business will take over the next few months.
"From now, this weekend, through April, May, June, probably an impact of $50,000 a month on this small business. On the economy of the county, Blount and Monroe county, probably $500,000 to $1 million a week in revenue that won't pass through now," Montgomery says.
Charlie Woods bought his summer house because it overlooks the Dragon. "I'm from Michigan. I come down here because I enjoy this motorcycle riding area."
He got here two days ago not knowing about the closure. So he'll be cutting his trip short to leave Friday morning.
"The people just won't come here if you can't go up and down through there," Woods says.

Just my luck, I'm going to have to cancel. I was so looking forward to meeting and riding with y'all.
I just got out of the hospital after surgery and this ride will be just a little too early to do.
Hope y'all have a great time.
