In a never ending effort to control every aspect of our lives the politicians have gained another win over freedom and made it a law that if you want a motorcycle license you have to take a state approved motorcycle safety course. You no longer have a free choice to do so. Evil or Very Mad
I spoke to Cathy, the owner of THE MOTORCYCLE SCHOOL in San Antonio, she expressed her concern that the attitude of her customers would go from, Happy to be Here to I'm pissed that I have to be here.
You dont have to wear a helmet in this state unless your younger than 21. Motorcyclists are the last of the cowboys in this country. The socialist politicians will eventually take this choice in lifestyle from us unless we ride upon our capitals regular. We have to remind the yo-yo's in charge we will stand up. Cool
Stand up guys and ride with as many of your motorcycle friends to you state capitals and cruised arond your capital building as many times as you can.

I just got mine moved over from Illinois. I took the course as a refresher in Florida back in 2000. I would recommend the course to everyone. Picked up a couple things I had forgot about.

I don't know how much the motorcycle course costs there, but I'm sure it just makes the price of admission to operating a motorcycle even more prohibitive. It's ridiculous enough that they charge 125 bucks here, just to print an "M" on your driver's license, and you don't even get a new expiration date.

I agree. I recomend the safety course to everyone whos a begginer but it should be your choice and not forced. The local Harley dealer charges $250. The local schools charge $150. Cool

It may be required, but few riders actually have a M on their license. I hate that it's mandatory (wont' work) but it's money well spent. Made me a much safer rider....actually avoided three accidents using the tips....currently accident free and hope it stays that way. I drive very safely, but the three times I "might" have wrecked, it was cagers doing stupid things. Two didn't "see" me, mainly because they weren't looking.

I'll get off my soap box now, but I think everyone should "voluntarily" take the course. Hey, it get's you out of the riding portion of your mc license...

I'm sure those training courses are fine programs, and make plenty of sense for somebody who lives in an urban area, where they cannot safely take their bike out on the road to learn. For anybody that lives in a rural area, there's no reason not to learn how to ride on back roads. For the government to make these courses mandatory, it's just the typical one size fits all mentality, that doesn't belong in a free society.

What these courses have done is take the burden of licensing off the state. Many states now won't test you for a mc license. When I let mine expire i had to take the msf course, even though I had held a mc license for over 20 years.

Got mine Fl in 01 and it cost $125.0 and wasn't mandatory then, but the test you had to take at the DMV was so hard, it was worth it to take the Safety Coarse AND... you didn't have to take the DMV test....Just had to go and have your license updated with MC added. Smile Smile
Not to mention....Insurance Company,s will knock off some bucks too.
