New here and wondering about my \'05 1300 C Empty New here and wondering about my '05 1300 C

Post  scott051300 Tue May 20, 2008 2:20 pm

Iv'e got a 1300C and the stock dunlop tire is a 170/80/15. Currently the speedo is about 10% higher than the actual speed. What I want to know is: what size do I need to fit the stock rim? And what brand is the best for all weather riding? Also what is the bigest width/heith I can go without hitting the fender? I really don't care about the "fat look" I just want to make sure I dont buy something to big... And lastly: i've heard that you can only have a 4" wide bead (so it will mount) is this true and how do I tell how wide the bead is or how do I specify that to the tire store?

Just so my reasoning is clear: The reason I want this tire is because I took a spill in a turning manuver due to slipery ground and I've heard that a car tire will greatly improve traction on straights and turns... Also i'm hoping to replace my rear cheaper than an actual mc tire Rolling Eyes

So let me know what I need. Thanks,
Scott

Yes Scott, they do.....it's Gstanfield. He is running a Grabber 205/70 and it is tallest you can safely run so far and makes the speedo almost spot on. He says he loves the way it cruises.

Here's the link to the photo's...(it's about 1/2 way down the page)......Very Happy

Check this link out also...it's why the car tire has soooo much better grip than a motorcycle tire. It that dispite what every one thinks the car tire is actually softer rubber than the motorcycle tire thus giving you more grip on any condition, including wet or wear traction is limited plus a larger contact patch. Here's the link to the durometer test! It don't lie!

Ok now i'm a bit more confident in my decision to go with a 205/65/15! And I need to make sure that the bead is about 4 1/2- 5 inches wide right? Thank you all so much for your help! I guess I just have to figure out if I want a directional or not and what brand...

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Douglas from Wally world was under $50. so if I didn't like it I wouldn't be out that much. Also its a 40,000 mile tire so I can get a different kind if I want in 2 years instead of a 70,000 mile that would last 4-5 years......I like to change things once in a while....

hmmm sorry but I don't care for that tread pattern... I'd like something a bit more exciting Rolling Eyes I was also thinking about the fact that most tires are different side to side (the side wall) So I think i'll probably try to find something that looks the same on both...

On the 1300's...what determines what you be able to ride or be able to seat the bead if you have stock rims is make sure the car tire will fit a 5" rim at least. I didn't just take the manufactures word...I brought a tape measure to the store and found one that thought would fit and it was Douglas 205 at WallyWorld for $46 and a non-directional tire. It was actually 4 1/2" un-mounted. So that the biggest hurdle of getting one mounted....most tires that fit 7" rim and high, high performance tires will NOT seat the bead.

Let us know if this heads you in the right direction.

..............bobby

.

Did you mean to say 5" at most? I mean the problem with mounting these is because the bead wont seat if to wide right? So does that mean our stock rims on the C are 5"? I only ask because of the way you have that worded. I mount tires on cars and the only problem I have is the bead being to narrow and we have to use a cheetah to blow a large amount of air into the tire very quickly... once I understand that i promise i'll stop asking stupid quesions Embarassed

SO I went to a tire store (firestone) and asked 'em for a 205/70/15 with a max of 5" bead, and they asked what it was for... I told them... They looked at me and said: "i'm not going to sell you that tire for that application because if you are mounting it on a rim that is only 3-1/2 - 4" wide it will strain the sidewalls and not seat properly, these are supposed to be on a 6" wide rim!"

So what i'm requesting from you fine people is info on your tire with pics and purchase locations so I know what I want when I get to the store!

Thanks in advance,Scott

Bwwhahahahahaha Welcome to our world.....Scott. All the places I have ever checked for a tire until I learned my lesson.....is to tell them, it aint none of your business. "Are you gonna sell me a tire or not!"...hehehe They are going to try to save your life, because they don't understand it.......BWwwhahahahahaha!

I don't ever tell anyone why or what I am buying because I have gotten that spill from every tire dealer and most everyone I have ever ridden with.....even the guys that I have road with for hundreds of miles and then they find out I have a car tire and...... Shocked OMG (Oh, my groceries) You are going to die, it wont work, or you crazy.....add everything else you want in there....hehehehe

Scott
The stock rim on a 1300 c model is 4.5 inches wide. Generally a tire at rest sitting on he rack in the store will give you a true measurement of what it will fit on.

I too ran into close minded idiots when shopping for my tire ................. so ........ I tried just avoiding the question of what it was for and when that didn't work I just told them what they wanted to hear ........ (translation) I lied to the brain dead closed minded non riding .... you know where this is going. Then I took the tire and rim to a small local bike shop and had it mounted. Paid cash, no reciept, no questions and have put a total of 17,000 miles on my darksides. Some on here have actually been able to get their stealers to mount them.

See you out there

OH 4 1/2 inches? Hmmm Well that makes me feel a bit better! I think in that case i'll just go with the strata zeno. That is if I can find someone who has it... I like the tread pattern And I was calculating the numbers and figured out that I'll have to go with the 205/70 or a 200/70 if there is such a thing, if I want the spedo to be closser. If my calculations are correct the 205/65 will actually be smaller than the stocker!

the handling is great, but the girlfriend did mention a slightly rougher jolt when hitting a hard bump. i am sure it is due to the 42 psi i am running.
