General Altimax Arctic
Has anyone had any experience with the General Altimax Arctic. I'm looking at the 205/70 15" for my 1100 Shadow and really like the tread pattern on this tire. Looks mean!! $66 aint too bad either.

Re: General Altimax Arctic
that's what I'm running on my v-strom 1000
excellent in winter, right now I'm running with a studded Karoo T in front, last winter I ran studded Karoo Ts front and back, rear traction was lacking, even with the studs, I got the bright Ideal of going darkside, originally I was going to try a studded Hakkappelitta 5 , but before I sunk that much $$ in a tire that might not even fit on the bike I decided to try an unstudded tire that was cheaper, the Altimax Artic is the one I ended up with
turns out, even unstudded, it outperforms the studded MC tire, enuf to give me confidence to go tiding in the middle of one of out "blizzard" and travel at the same speeds I do in a 4wd cage

Re: General Altimax Arctic
I wish my 250/50-17 was only $66 like a 15" even at $109, it was still half the price of a Hakk 5 and Consumer Reports actually rates it 2nd best snow/winter tire, Hakk 5 being # 1
Haven't done much non winter riding with it, or much experimenting with pressure even though I've put close to 2k miles on it so far

Re: General Altimax Arctic
Thanks, now atleast I know someone has tried one on a bike now. I like the look of the tread pattern (looks mean) and just needed to know the handling aspects of it is all. i will have to do some experimenting with the tire pressure, but that's with any tire. For the price it just may be a win win situation for us!

mostly cause someone here already has my regular handle (RandyO) and I had to come up with something to log on
My primary purpose of experimenting with the darkside was to enhance my winter riding, not sure if I'm going to stay darkside for summer or not,
I may try a more summer oriented CT as well, the Altimax Artic has sipes that can feel a bit squirmey over road irregularities, I haven't played with pressure much
if you think I'm hardcore, check this out, riding the ice road to Tuktayaktuk check it out here

Re: General Altimax Arctic
I'd imagine you'd want a bit less pressure in the cold than summer in order for the sidewalls to flex.

I found out I want a bit less all the time, when I first had it installed, I just used the common pressure I see posted here 42psi and went with it
it handled different, but I dealt with it and got used to it, went up a couple psi, went down a couple psi, couldn't feel a difference
YESTERDAY, first time in weeks that I haven't been riding on ice half the time, I decide to experiment with pressure, I dropped it down to 32, whow, what a difference, it feels like a MC tire, stays turned in once the countersteer is initiated and I don't get ANY "tip up" feeling as I lean
I'd like to get a video

Re: General Altimax Arctic
And there ya go.
I'm still trying to imagine putting over 2k on a tire without hitting the pavement! BTW, those are some mean sipes on that tire; should be the reason for all that traction. I just wish they made it in a 175/16 so I could run one!
