Will a m/c tire fit this car mag?
Hey all,
Seeing as you guys are into using car tires on m/c rims, maybe you have some wisdom on going the opposite direction.
I waana build a trike with these Cragar Elininator mags in 17X8 size. Wondering if there's any inherent problems in fitting a m/c tire on these wheels. I was thinking of going with Avon venom 300/40/17s, but they recommend a minimum rim width of 10". If this tire is too wide for this wheel, maybe someone could recommend a size that would work?
Thx

I say go for it. You obviously have more money than sense, so go ahead and spend away.

Not really asking if the idea makes sense or not.

RE WILL A MC TIRE WORK ON THIS MAG WHEEL?
I see no reason why not if you can get it to bead up.

I take it that you are putting this M/C tire on the front.

Re: Will a m/c tire fit this car mag?
I apologize for not being too clear. I stumbled upon your site while searching for info on using m/c tires on car rims. Seems you guys do the opposite, so i figured you had more knowledge than me.
I'm building a custom trike bicycle. i wanna use the rims shown in the pic, but not car tires, as they have a larger footprint than a m/c tire. Since I'm peddling the thing, the less rolling resistance the better. The car wheels and tires would go on the back as in this pic below. In this pic, he's got car tires.
I know this isn't the normal type of question for your forum, but i thought maybe you m/c guys would have some insight.
Thx

Metzler makes an ME880XXL in 210/50zr17. I can't find the maximum rim width but the minimum is 6.5 inches and most tires I have found have a 2 inch range in rim width. They are a bit pricey though at $209 each. I think you would be better off finding a cheap car tire (one of those $29.00 specials from Pep Boys). It would be a much lighter tire and I think weight would be more of a factor than width.

Look up a 205/40 17 car tire. They will fit on an 8" rim and they are just a tad wider than 8" at the tread. I found some for $50.00 each at TireCrawler.com

Re: Will a m/c tire fit this car mag?
Thanks for the suggestions.
I was eyeing this one by Avon (AV72 240/50/16) which looks like it has a nice small contact point.. 240 would put it at around 9.4 inches wide, so maybe an 8" wide rim would fit?
It's pricey though.

Re: Will a m/c tire fit this car mag?
spinman, you are insane .... you fit perfectly here i cant help you in your search but it looks like yall are headed in the right direction. good luck with the build and please keep us posted on the progress. I too would think that you would be better off with weight reduction than contact friction reduction. but then again it may be a case where once rolling it would be easier to keep rolling but most likely I am just full of crap and have no clue what I am talking about
good luck with the build
See you out here

Having all the info up front would have avoided my first comment, but we do get trolls once in a while that want to put bike tires on cars.

Re: Will a m/c tire fit this car mag?
I got the idea for those tires from the guy who built thus chopper bike with an Avon Venom 300/40/17 out back.
he said the m/c tires roll much better than a car tire, FWIW.

Re: Will a m/c tire fit this car mag?
Since there will be very little weight on the tires and if ride quality is not important, perhaps using a car tire pumped up with high pressure, you might have a smaller contact patch and little rolling resistance.
