No riding for a while
I was in Myrtle Beach this past weekend. On Monday after downshifting to turn at a light, My trans decided it was time to stop shifting. As of now it only shifts into 1st and neutral.
Guess what I'm doing Saturday.
Yep, pulling the engine/trans and beginning disassembly.
Oh well, after this the bike will basicly be 'new'. I've redone both front and rear suspension, all the wheel and steering bearings, brakes, just about everything.

Re: No riding for a while
46000 miles and a Kaw 1500 Nomad.
It has to be a bent shift fork. They are the weak link in Kaws design.
$200.00 worth of parts but 40+ hours labor. I have to remove the engine and tear it completely down so as to be able to split the cases.

Re: No riding for a while
I know the feeling about the no riding, been down all week and now thru the weekend, chain, sprockets seriously need replacing, living near bilski's is good, he'll do my work,, also heading in that myrtle beach direction on Sat. but now in the truck,,back to see the folk, dad's still slipping, and now weight loss is an issue, mom needs the support, and my bro had a heart procedure(3rd or 4th this yr) on 5/13,,
hope your repairs go smoothly, be glad you can wrench, I'd bleed to death doing mine dang old skin, thinner with each yr.

...and people poke fun at HARLEY? Not only can I pull my gearbox guts out, I can put a six speed back in the same box if I want.
Ah well, good and bad in all of them I guess.

Re: No riding for a while
I got the cases split this morning and it took all of 5 seconds to diagnose the problem.
One of the shift forks broke. Subsequently it wouldn't sit on the gear properly and wouldn't allow the movement required to change gears.
New parts ordered. Just gotta wait now.

Re: No riding for a while
Glad for your sake that's all it was! Of course you know it's now your time to clean and wax the underside of the bike while it's down and do all the little ditties you normally do once a year. (think spokes...)

No spokes, mags. But yes, lotsa little things to take care of.
Hopefully it'll be back on the road soon.

Re: No riding for a while
She's 95% reassembled on the bench. But the way my luck is going I'll have to pull her apart again.
I had to pull the heads off again today because the cam chain guides had moved during assembly and weren't hitting the chains quite right. I have to pull the clutch back off because I think I have a washer out of sequence.
It's hard to take pics when your up to your elbows in 10w40. But I'll try if I have to take much apart again.
But it has been edumacational. I now understand more abou this set up than I ever desired to know.
