Darkside Wobble! Worried! Empty Darkside Wobble! Worried!

Post  BigdriverK Mon Apr 21, 2014 11:26 pm

Recently went darkside on a 98 Valkyrie 1500Ct . Went with a Gen Altimax HP 205/60/16 running about 40lbs. I'm 6'2" 380, And at about 80mph bike goes crazy with wobble ! Was told tire had been properly balanced , so what gives? I also often ride 2 up with the wife so need to get this straight ASAP! Please help !! Have no idea what the problem could be.Also nut cage has been removed!

I'd be throwing at least 4 oz of dynabeads in that tire....like RIGHT NOW. You'll know pretty quick if the tire was balanced properly or not.

Darkside Wobble! Worried! Empty maybe a bad tire

Post  genedjr Wed Apr 23, 2014 3:14 pm

When you say wobble, are you talking forceful vibration at the handlebars? or?
Does it only wobble at speed? If so, I agree with the dyna beads answer.
If you get a wobble all the time its just worse at speed, check the tire. It may just be a bad tire.

Darkside Wobble! Worried! Empty balance stand

There are a couple of things -

  • Re-check the tire pressure. While I have not heard 40lbs being an issue - maybe it is.
  • How many miles are on the bike?
  • Have you ever had the swingarm bearings checked? Retorqued?
  • Did your last rear tire wear evenly? Front?
  • Was the front tire changed when you changed the back? Sometimes the front pressure needs to change as I did on mine. 1 lb made a big difference for me.
  • If you have a buddy with a 1500 and a bike tire on back - swap tires and see of the wobble stays or goes.

Also please define the wobble.

Darkside Wobble! Worried! Empty wobble

Please provide more details about the wobble. There are so many way to get a wobble, that the specifics need to be understood.

For me, the wobble started at 90+ and was more tail wagging then tank slapping. Unless I was braking, than the tank slapping was crazy. I fixed it with varying tire pressures and now I am fine.

This is more of a problem than many would admit, and tire pressure is most definately a big factor. At these speeds, balance would not be a major factor. I've yet to get rid of this on my Concours, but by using different air pressure have raised the speed to over 90 MPH. Good luck.
