this is my new 427 small block with Nascar SB2 heads. I will be headed to the dyno on wednesday to check out this motor. I think i should put it in a Boss Hoss. What do ya think ,,,a 900 hp motorcyc;e :-)

Saw a boss hoss trike at bike week. Looked like a 3 wheeled Vet. Had a 504 chevy engine with nitrous. Would have to have a bigger gas tank though. Only had a 5 gallon tank.

I am hoping that this motor will get the 67 camaro into the 200 mph range at the next land speed trails and low 9's at the drag strip in Super Stock. I am just gonna have to wait and see what it does on the dyno to know for sure.

Re: what do you do after you put a car tire on the bike ....
From one engine builder to the next, that is one sweet sounding engine. I'm building a 496 big block for my little brothers El camino. I'm building it on the mild side though, only shooting for 600HP on fuel and another 250 with spray. I'm hoping to have it all ready to rock when he gets back from Iraq in another 400 or so days
Oh, BTW do you ever run on the salt? I'm building a little salt truck for myself as time and money allows. So far I have a highly worked over 289CI SBC with a measly 8.3:1 compression ratio. Oh yeah I also have a little spiny whistle thingy to make up for such a low compression ratio. (Turbo for those who are wondering what I'm talking about) Time will tell, but I'm hoping for 180-200mph with it. If not I'll just have to add more boost

i went to the dyno with the 427 and it only made 800 hp , so now i need to see why it is down on power. that is only 100 hp better than the 489 BBC that I had in tha car ( old test motor) so I need to figure out where the rest of the power is .... maybe it is the cast single plane intake. I need to get the number up to 900 to get a 200 mph pass. Well, at least the bike should go 200 the next time around

I have been running the land speed events at Maxton , NC. If I ever get the car where it could set a record on the salt , I will head that way, But I think the gas coupe record is 233 mph , so I need alot more hp.
good luck with your projects , and maybe I will make the trip to the salt next year.

Re: what do you do after you put a car tire on the bike ....
I'm hoping to make it down to maxton or the texas mile one of these days, but the salt is closer and well..... It's Bonneville so I just gotta go. BTW< I will not be there this year, but I'll be on the salt in '09 so maybe I'll see you there.
As to the lack of power that you're looking to fix, does the power taper off quickly or just never seem to climb as high as it should?
One of these days I'll build a 540 to replace the 396 in my 65 Impala, one day....

ok , bonneville in 09 sounds like a plan.
As for the motor , it just goes flat after 7200 rpm. If I can get it to pull 500 more rpm I think I will be happy.

Re: what do you do after you put a car tire on the bike ....
Do you use a wideband A/F setup, or did the dyno have one hooked up?
BTW, the intake could very well be restricting or inhibiting good flow up high, but then again so could the heads, cam or one of severall other places (as you would well know) I'm not sure what intake you're running, but maybe you can try a higher open carb spacer. Sometimes the small stuff makes big differences.
Are you a member on landracing.com forums? I've recently joined over there in planning my attack on the salt and it's a pretty informative place. Any good forums on high performance engine building you know of?
One more thing, that engine of yours has a crazy fast response time in the video, I'm certainly impressed. When I get my 496 built I'll have to post a video but I doubt it will be as impressive.
Lookin good,
George

we tried multiple spacers and different header lengths. this engine always stopped at 7200 rpm so it looks like an intake issue. The cfm at that rpm was only 950 , so it was under what the carb can do. The heads flow enough to make more power. I am working on the new intake today to get ready for a record attempt next saturday.

yes , I am a member there , but do more reading than posting. There is also a section there for maxton. As for engine building forums , there are a few , but most are worthless.
http://www.eng-tips.com has real good people on it, but may not have info on a specific comination.

It has a really light weight crankshaft. That is the biggest difference between the big blocks and small blocks. My 489 crankshaft was 75 lbs and the 427 sbc crank only weighs 45 lbs. But the 489 had over 600 ft-lbs torque at 4k , and the 427 won't do that :-)

Re: what do you do after you put a car tire on the bike ....
Yep, a lightweight rotating mass certainly helps with responsiveness and quick revving. The only drawback for me though is that I run heavy stuff like my '65 Impala (4200lbs) and the extra torque of the big block makes up for the weight when I'm in gear trying to get all that steel rolling On a lightweight vehicle lightweight parts are much much more efficient.
Then again I'm kinda a torque junky as I have a 7,800lb 4x4 diesel truck that will get 21mpg on the interstate, 25mpg on two lane roads at 65mph, pull 15,000lb trailers with ease at or above the speed limit on any road I've found, run low 13's in the 1/4 mile and will still be running long after I've worn out my gas engine toys. The stock rotating assembly weighs over 250lbs, but holds up just fine at over 1,000 Ft/lbs
I really wish I could afford another diesel just for a toy, but a friend of mine is working on setting a few records with his and my funds just won't allow it so I'm stuck playing with my spark plugs, which is still fun for sure
Hurry up and get that intake changed, drop that thing in a car and let us see what it'll do.

Re: what do you do after you put a car tire on the bike ....
I got to run the car today. It went pretty much as expected. The old 3300 pound camaro went 6.03@115.9 in the eighth mile. 60' time was 1.40 so that is off a bit but should still be good enough for a national record. the 1/4 times were 9.44@142.
If i could put this motor on the Boss Hoss it would really scream, but I am not sure if I would want to ride it :-)

9.44 is some giddy up and go. How far down track does she carry the front wheels?
