Stupid question time Empty Stupid question time

Post  donatalie Sun Sep 19, 2010 5:40 pm

Humor me, please...
The motorcycle dealers here in south central PA have all told me that if my 2000 Yamaha Royal Star Venture had a car tire on it when I brought it in for the annual safety inspection, they would not pass it. Two questions... First, does anyone here in PA run a CT, and if so, can you get it inspected with it on? Second, I'm thinking that maybe I can keep a spare rim with a MT on it, and ride the bike with the CT on it. When inspection time rolls around, just switch the wheels, and then after it passes, switch them back. The key of course, is how difficult/time consuming would it be to make the switch? Does anyone else do this? All responses would be welcome. Thanks, Don

I know a couple guys that live there and have had no problem with the inspectors. I would take it someplace else. They have no right telling you what tires you have to use.

Take a look at what the law requirements are. Dollar gets you a donut that there's NOTHING in any state law about car tires. Insurance companies only require that there be a DOT certified tire on the bike. If there were a problem, surely they would be the first on the bandwagon.

Stupid question time Empty Here's the kicker...

Post  donatalie Mon Sep 20, 2010 6:29 am

There is a sub-section in the PA Inspection Manual section for motorcycles that says anything the mechanic deems "unsafe" can be cause for rejection. I know, the mechanics are ASSUMING that CT's on motorcycles are inherently unsafe. They all say that they think the bike would be unsafe when leaning in turns. I know that you all that have been doing this for a while know better, but there's no changing their minds. None of them (6 dealerships and 3 local shops) are willing to inspect it that way!

I take mine to a car inspection place. They never question the tire.

Stupid question time Empty PA has motorcycle only inspection stations

Post  donatalie Mon Sep 20, 2010 6:07 pm

In PA they have separate certifications for motorcycle inspections and car inspections. You can't get a motorcycle inspected at a car shop, except of course if they are licensed for both. Two of the local shops I've checked with do both. They both said no to the CT. Still searching...

Dont tell them ahead of time. Then by the time they get to the tire they'll do it if they want to get paid.

Yeah I didn't walk in and say ......
Hey I got a car tire on my motorcycle ...will you inspect it....

I just made an appointment for an inspection....
They checked brakes, exhaust, and tread depth.....
Mechanic took it for a ride......
Only comment he had was about how easily the bike shifted..... Very Happy

To the best of my knowledge, which ain't much, lol, the only tire requirement for motorcycles is that they have to be in good condition and have a minimum of 2/32 of tread on em.That's a DOT regulation across the board.Tell the guys who would not pass you to show you the rule in the book that they have. And they had better have it.If they still give ya shit about it,call the DMV and rat em out. You'd be surprised just how many of these so called inspectors try to make up their own rules as they go along.I know this cause we shut down a few of em here for just that reason.
