another member suggested that i post it here in case any other 85 1100 owners wants some more sound without having to go aftermarket.so,without further adoo.you will drill 6 1/2"holes on the outer exhaust around the pipe that is allready there where the exhaust gases exit.the way i did it,i took a phillips head srew driver and a hammer to make indentations so that drilling would be easier and to keep the bit from walking.then i took 1/4" drill bit and drilled the holes.then i took the 1/2" drill bit and made the holes bigger.you will want to drill 1 hole at a time using the 1/4" and then the 1/2" bit.doing it this way you will be able to space them out so they dont look bad.then take some high heat black paint and go over the holes so they dont rust.now one would think it would sound like crap.well,it dont Very Happy it sounds great in my book and i'm hard to please.i allso noticed that my rpm's have dropped by a few hundred, which is a good thing, allso my mileage went up some and the engine now runs very smooth.keep in mind that this bike has a collector on it allso, maybe it helps who knows.but im very satisfied with the results.when i started the mod,i drilled only 4 at first.had the wife go out and listen as i drove by.she says it rumbles like a bike is supposed to now instead of the factory pop if you will.i was fine with it yesterday but pondered on 2 more holes in each pipe last night and finished drilling two more holes this morning with a totall of 6 on each pipe.all i can say is,yea baby, now im really lovin it and i have no backfires and there is still quite of bit of back pressure.i wouldnt do no more than 6 on each pipe for sure as the results with 12 totall are very satisfying.i will try and get pics up if anyone really needs to see it.so good luck and happy riding and if any one ever has any questions on what i did.feel free to ask. cheers Smile -kenny-

thanks Very Happy and probably, personally,i wouldnt do it to anything under 1100 cc's though.oh and thanks for your tips bro,you were very helpfull !! Smile

EDIT; went for a 128 mile ride today and my mileage jumped from 49 miles to gallon to 62.usually i'm at 100 miles went the gauge shows half which would be 2.2 gallons used.after todays ride, its not quite at half with 128 miles Twisted Evil so,i think that all the older shadows that have a collector will definately benefit from this mod.thats pretty darn good considering when i bought the bike and hadnt done any maintenace on it i was only getting 45 miles to the gallon.im using rotella t 15-40 and 89 octane.i use 89 cause of the elevation where i live, ive allways got better mileage in all my vehicles with 89.ride safe !! cheers Smile

Nice mod! I bet is sounds awesome. Now we just need to get Steve-O and you together to see who's rumbles more. The straight baffle removal, or the 6 extra holes. Smile

if i had those pipes, thats what i would have done, but remember on the 85's the pipe starts small and flares at the end like a funnel.i do intend on getting a later model by the end of next year.actually,i was saving money to buy one by this october, but when this deal came along,i couldnt pass it up as a tide me over bike till i can get another one. Update,i decided to connect all the 2 of the 6 holes on each pipe.now it has 3 slots on each pipe.not only did it free up some more HP,it sounds and runs even smoother.i was pondering on this yesterday and couldnt help myself.so i finished it up last night.after i finished and looked down in the exhaust, you wouldnt believe at the restriction this bike has.for those that have this bike or these kind of pipes, dont worry about lack of back pressure, cause there is still plenty.inside the exhaust, besides the power chamber, there is a round plate with 3 slots on each pipe.actually,i think it was some what stopped up.she's breathing now and still no popping and no issues.cheers !
P.S i got the slots idea from youtube, person did it to his HD.it still looks factory allthough i will still have to touch up the slots a lil with an air grinder.the steel ate up the bits i had.still very satisfied with the final results.beats the hell out of a $300 exhaust on this bike.

I did the same on my 1100. Then Idecided to go ahead and just use a holesaw and remove the baffle all together. Ths sound is abit louder, but not like after market mufflers by no means. The sound is more hollow now. So i decided being after market pipes usually don't use a crossover tube between the mufflers, I'd just plug mine to see how the muflers sounded without it. Sure enough, it took out the hollow sound and now is more like a "thump" when it fires. Much, much better. I like it now. A hell of alot better (and cheaper) then any after market system for sure.
I also mounted 2" washers inside the ends of each mufflers on a 1/4" bolt, so I can open or close them and control the level of sound. I leave them open for the most part, but if I ever need to makeit quiet, all I need to dois turn the washers closed and I have almost the stock sound (just a better low rumble then stock) Just me.
