After taking a closer look I wonder if the tread pattern on the edge of the tire would cause a rougher ride

NO way! I am running a snow and rain tire and you wouldn't know unless I told you. Plus my wife thinks it the best riding tire we have ever put on our ride!

Looks like it would handle the rain great. Let us know what size you go with, and the bead with of the tire........ Good luck.

You would ideally like to be less than 1" wider then the rim its mounting on. Obviously the closer it is to actual rim width the easier it is to seat the bead. Going with a tire that was designed for a 7" wide rim will never fit on a 4" wide rim.
