Tire for spoked rim 1800S

New Guy here. Can those of you with 1800S's using a tube and C/T give me your tire size and make of tire? I see loads of info, but not much specific to the 1800S on tire info.

Hey JW, My sig. tire is available in 205/65R15, and I've seen a couple threads on it here, from what I remember there were no clearance issues, and it's a good performer, Toyo Proxes TPT also, along with many others in that size. Good Luck!

Hi everyone. I am also new here. I am also tired of buying a new tire every 6,000 miles. And I am ready to cross over to the "darkside". I have an '02 1800S too and I want to get this right before I purchase a tire. My bike' as I think all 1800S's do, runs a 170/80-15 and you are saying this 205/65R15 will work fine on it? And also do we all agree that it is OK to run a tube inside a radial?
I want to say that you guys have a great web-site here and I wish I would have found it earlier.

Welcome to our site and the...........Darkside Rulz!

Check out one of our guys.."wayne". He sealed his rims with this special sealant and works fantastic! Easy to do and has a play by play on here with pics! Most have went to this instead of the tube. Still some guys use the tube with the tire with NO issues on a radial tire!

I just finished installing a P205/65R-15 Goodyear Assurance TripleTred on my VTX 1800R. I also have a 15" spoke rim. I now have around 500 miles on it. Run a tube with it as well.

I love it. I run 45lbs pressure. It's a little squirmy on rough road under 10 MPH. So simply go 15!!

The Inner tube or sealling the rim is not the problem. I sealled my rim, but the problem is that there is not way to seat the bead. The tire holds air but it ain't seated. this is what I've done so far.

That’s my tire above, looks cool in the pic , but I could not get the bead to seat on either side. In short I think there is a difference between motorcycle bias rims and Radial tires, I’m no tire expert.

I silicon sprayed the lip with silicon,pressure it at least 120 PSI and Beat the side wall with a 20 LB sledge hammer. It was insaine!@#$$

OK, I installed a Bridgestone Protenza 195/65-15 onto my 2006 1300S in September. I sealed the rim per Wayne's post with 3M 5200 and put the tire on with NO TUBE. I did have a problem with getting the beads to seat at home so I took it to a friendly car tire shop and got them to run the pressure up with their system. We did not check the pressure but the bead popped on both sides before anyone got TOO nervious. We did have to remove the valve core and push the tire off of the rim all the way around on both sides and lub liberally. That seemed to allow the tire to move evenly onto the rim and popped right up onto the bead. I have put over 1500 miles since and never seen any pressure drop in the tire to indicate any leakage around the spokes or rim. I check the pressure at least once a week when I clean up the bike. It is completely seated and runs true with no wobble or vibration at all.

Maybe its the brand... I could get the tire to hold air not problem but neither is truely seated. To verify that it was not seated I checked down at the edge of the rim, the tire had a small ridge that should have been at a consistant distance from the rim; but was not... the tire was not seated although it looked like it.

Take a look at your rim edge area for me.

OK guys here is the skinny on mine.

03 1800 VTX R 15 inch rear spoke wheel.
Installed a P205/65R-15 Goodyear Assurance TripleTred with tube. Fits like a glove. No Modifications.

I removed the rear wheel myself and contacted 3 different shops in person with wheel in hand before I found one that would mount the car tire on bike wheel.

The last shop that finally agreed to mount the tire asked me if it was for a motorcycle and I told them I was building a Trike. Guess somehow that made everything OK. OOH they thought that was cool so agreed to do the job.

They had quite a bit of trouble getting the tire to bead. It was close at 110lbs of air but no banana. I have to give them credit, they were determined. Finally as a last resort they took the tire and wheel over to their commercial department. That’s where they mount the big boy toys. (Semi Tires)

They told me in advance that the pressure they would be putting in it could destroy the tire and wheel as well. By now I really didn’t care. Figured if it went up like an atom bomb then I could buy a new non spoke wheel and make it bigger and maybe better.

They took wheel and tire and put it in a tire cage for safety and slammed the air to it. After some rather disturbing thoughts and moments and 149 lbs of pressure the lower bead popped into place. However there was still the top bead. The air kept flowing….
At 191lbs and a whole lot of sweat on my part, POP and the top bead slid right into place.

I paid the people and took my new Darkside tire home.

It's the narrowness of our particular rim. Makes any ct with or without a tube a mother to seat.

Can a radial car tire take that presure for a short time and not be damaged, I"m not not being a curmudgeon
, I to want to join the darkside, but do not want to have a damaged tire on the bike...I'm not expert. Just want some wisdom.

Could part of my problem be using a 195 insted of a 205?

By golly, that could be it. This is what it looks like now. I have around 1,000 miles on it 2 up and no problems.
