The 165mm car tire scoop...........
*************************************************************************************************************************
To: Every 1300 guy that's a Darksider.
I got bad news and good news.
Here's the scoop I just got from my tire dealer friend. Some of the molds for the 165's have been purchased by Coker. This is the company that sells all the old tires for antique cars that aren't manufactured any more. Plus they will become a lot more expensive.

Re: The 165mm car tire scoop...........
Quality is probably going to be going down drastically as well then. I used to work in the auto restoration buisness and their tires are far from the rgeatest due to the fact that most people don'r really drive on them (people who actually drive theri cars run better and cheaper tires) The rubber compounds tend to be hard and traction is poor in my experience.

George,
You are correct......that's the bad news of my above post. So, right now I am looking at a new option for us 1300 darksiders. I think we can get a "special" 205 to fit. I will be trying it in the next two weeks and give my report of it.

Never owned a VTX but on the Valkyrie some had to do the " Nut Cage Mod " to keep the tire from rubbing. See link http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/cartirenutcages.htm

Now that's one smoking, it would be a good one to put on the Valkyrie page so they will not have to look all over tthe place to find it. Just highlight and copy or link like you did here.
Joe (toasted) did the foots mod on his 1300 and put a 205 on his and it clears by about a 3/16" on each side. I don't think he had to cut anything on his fenders to run it or at least I have seen he had to do.
Thanks.................bobby

Check back here and I will PM you. Plus be sure when you log on to see if the message at the top of your screen is lit red. If it is...you got mail.

Nope, i didn't have to cut anything. It's close...i was a bit leery...double and triple checking the fender rails and all the bolts/nuts near it.

Wayne,
Here's the scoop!!!!!!!
I have done the measuring......and here's the data. It's a Douglas 205/65/15. They are about $ 70 from Walmart. I measured the ones around here and they are around 4 1/2" at rest outside to outside at the bead.
They also make a 195/65/15 but it's smaller in diameter than our 165's, but the 205 is right on and a little bigger in diameter.
I am trying to get one mounted now for Saturday, but the bike shop is booked with work.

Re: The 165mm car tire scoop...........
For you VTX guys.
FWIW, another shadow guy runs a 170/75/15 on his and said it works fine. He said it dropped the bike about a 1/2 inch closer to the ground (he was short and welcomed the drop). This could be another option.

Re: The 165mm car tire scoop...........
I'm tempted to go ahead abuy the other 3 Arizonian prems from the shop I got mine from. But they'd probably suffer from dry rot befor I even get the chance to put one of them on.
Re: The 165mm car tire scoop...........
Alright...here's the Major Headlines for Saturday Jan. 5th on the Douglas 205/65/15. It is "ON" and talk about nice looking. I bought it from Wallyworld for $64.00 w/tax at 8:15 this morning and mounted it shortly after that.
*******************It's NOT a V or Z rated tire, it's a snow and rain tire.*************************************
Plus the cooking oil did the trick. It went on about 80 psi. Now here's where the trick that I learned. You cannot just put the oil on the bead and the rim!!!!! You have to lather it on all the way to 1/3 of the side wall of the tire. The first try, we only did the bead and rim....and NO go, because the some of the side wall was on the rim, So we broke it down and rubbed it down like explained above and POP......POP! We have a stock 1300 rim with a 205!!!!!!!!!
I will post pic from work MONDAY! Laptop is not set up to do pics. Right now you got to take my word for it.....hehehehehehe

This guy has a Goodyear on it, but when I was looking, I couldn't find a goodyear with those dimentions.
I can't wait to see pics of the 205. I really hope I can follow that on my next CT. I wonder if the fender and stuff is similar on my VT1100C compared to the 1300. Great work bobby.

Re: The 165mm car tire scoop...........
Hurry up with some pics, go in to work early I'll have to see if I can find one mail order since I am pretty die hard anti-Wal-Mart.
Anyway, I gotta get some warm weather to melt some snow so I can ride and wear out my continental milestones (best MT I've ever run on a cruiser BTW) I do want some pics though so I have something to drool about until then.

Re: The 165mm car tire scoop...........
So, here's an update on the 205....
Caution....the vegetable oil is slick. Be sure you have a mild de-greaser handy to wash the tire after you mount it. Because of lathering the cooking oil without hesitation all over the tire it will get on the side wall and tread. YOU NEED TO GET THIS OFF BEFORE YOU TAKE IT FOR A SPIN!!!!!
It took 15 mg's of weight which is nothing to balance it. That's pretty good I thought.
The recommended air pressure is 35 psi. I put that in and it rode fantastic.
