Opinion: What is the best tire?
I am new on the site, and enjoying it very much, and am ready to purchase a new tire. I know many people have many opinions, but there is no place like this vast base of knowledge where everything has been tried and tested to get a very good idea what tire most people consider the VERY BEST. (and also to know that I have it .) So, I thank you all very much ahead of time for taking a minute to help newcomers like me and probably a few others make a wise decision.
I ride an '02 1800S and I understand that I need a 205/65R15.
Thanks again. The Rentman.

Re: Opinion: What is the best tire?
Rentman,
Welcome to our site and make yourself at home. As far as the 1800's that the tire you need! If I am not mistaken the only difference between your 1800S and the 1300S is the rim is wider on yours, which will allow it to bead easier! The 205/65/15 should be perfect!
Are you going to seal your rims or use your tube? Be sure and check out one of our members and his technique for mounting a car tire on a spoke rim!

Re: Opinion: What is the best tire?
Yes, I have been reading up on sealing the wheel. I am planning to do that. But my main question was what brand of tire does the majority of people think is the best?
Thanks for responding.

Bwwhahahahaha Yes, we can't there from here...............
Rentman! A lot of guys like the Grabber because of the uni-direction and they love it! I on the other hand as well as a bunch of others don't buy tire just for looks, but handling as well! We chose the Douglas from Walmart! I began my darkside path on a 165/80/15 VW tire and none of them were uni-directional tires, so I don't have a problem with them. I will try to find Insp#484 and his darkide tire and post it for you....I really like it also!

Cool! Thanks for the reply guys. I'm also looking at the Michelin Hydro-edge. For my bike, which I think alot of people are, there are "almost" no money limits. I have spent much more on extras for my bike than I have spent on all of the vehicles I have ever owned. So enjoyable!

Re: Opinion: What is the best tire?
Let me reconfirm this. I bought me a 205/65R15 Hydro-edge. This tire is 8 1/8'' wide unmounted. Right now I have a 170/80 15 Metzler at 7 3/8'' and it is 1/2'' off of the drive shaft and the fender measures 8 3/4'' inside. The fender may be OK but I am really worried about the tire hitting the drive shaft. Would one of you pioneers let me know if this is going to work?
Thanks again. Rentman.

Re: Opinion: What is the best tire?
You should be alright, that tire was made for a wider rim so when mounted on yours it will be narrower, that's why the even narrower 1300 rims have bead seating problems, excellent choice, good luck.

Re: Opinion: What is the best tire?
The thing is, these tires wear out so much slower, nobody can be REALLY well versed personally in TOO many different tires! LOL Finding a consensus is nigh on impossible.
Which leads me to an interesting point... have there been any tires that were just HATED? I remember reading a Texas X guy who's quitting the darkside because he hated it...but I didn't recognize the tire he was running and was wondering if it was just a cheap POS or something.

Re: Opinion: What is the best tire?
Thanks Dan for the reassurance. It will be next week before I get her mounted. I am looking all over around here for some 3M 5200 to seal my wheel. I think I'm gonna like it but it sure did look too big to me.

tire fit
From what I have read most CT are rated on a 6.5 inch rim width A quick rule of thumb for each 1/2 inch of rim width you go down your tire goes down by 2/10 of an inch A 205 is app. 8.07inches on a 6.5 rim sub about 4/10 . I allso have a 205 it is close I can just about fit a thick piece of paper between the drive shaft and tire but that is enough rember once in place the tire does not move It just runs stright

Re: Opinion: What is the best tire?
It will be close, but that's fine, as it spins the tire gets narrower and a little taller. Mine only has maybe 1/16" at rest, but never rubs, that's as close as it will get. You can just run a tube for your CT size with a rim strip. Have Fun!Rentman wrote:Thanks Dan for the reassurance. It will be next week before I get her mounted. Re: Opinion: What is the best tire?
Thanks again. I am in the process right now of sealing my wheel. I could not find the 5200 but I do have some Sikaflex and after doing some research, I think it will work if anything will. I just got the valve stem put in and now I'm looking for the thread to see how thick the Sikaflex needs to be.

Re: Opinion: What is the best tire?
the more evenly you can apply it, the easier the balance...
food for thought.

Re: Opinion: What is the best tire?
Well, I applied a thin coat yesterday afternoon and by 9:00 last night it seemed to be cured so I applied a second coat. This morning it seems to be very close but I will wait until late afternoon before mounting just to make sure. It seemed to do very well and I think is going to be good. Sikaflex 201 is some good stuff. I will let you know the outcome.
