The Yamaha riders forum is sadly lacking in the thread department. (It would seem I'm the only Yamaha rider here) No

The one lonely post here (by me) just needed some company, so here it is.

I changed the oil on the mighty Stratoliner today, and what chore.

Why is it that something that looks so easy turns out to be a royal pain in the a$$? This is the second one I've done on this bike and it doesn't seem to be getting any easier. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I got the job done in about an hour, but it should have only taken 30 minutes.

Oh well, better luck next time.

Do you have to take the exhaust loose to change your oil filter. I know the vstars do and that would so suck.

See you out there

No, the filter on the Strat is a spin on and is on the lower front of the frame. The hard part is in the draining; there are three drain plugs just ror the engine oil. affraid

The jack I have works, but you have to move it at least once to get to all three plugs.

I have an idea for a jig to put on top of the jack to make things a little easier, but it's still in the early stages of "engineering".

My wife rides a V Star 1100 Classic. I'm going to get the Barons filter relocation kit for it because I don"t want to have to do that.

I've got a tip for ya....our Xs have 2 plugs and I don't use the jack, but no normal oil pan would fit under the bike either...so I got 2 of those 9x13 aluminum cake pans...the cheap throw away ones, from walmart...one pan up front and one pan in the back...drain both at the same time and i've never filled both pans up.

Xs hold 4 quarts of oil and only one of the pans is near full.

That should speed ya up.

Welcome to the group too. cheers

Thanks for the tip.

The Strato has no center stand and sits very low to the ground, but this method may work.

I might have a problem with the amount of oil though. The bike is air and oil cooled, so it holds a total of 5.2 quarts of oil. About 2.5 of that drops when I remove the reservoir drain plug.

I park mine on top of 2x4's, tires and side stand, that way I can get a bigger pan underneath...

Post  skittels Mon Sep 22, 2008 8:35 pm

ok while I have been researching for a long time and thinking and waiting for a good bunch of info on darksideing my royal tour deluxe 97 but she will be getting the fatness in the spring
the bike I will be testing my likes/dislikes on my second most ridden bike an 03 intruder1500 stock tire 180/70 15 the tire that my research and wallet seem to be pointing at is General Altimax HP 195/65-15 Tire Price: $58
if this goes half as well as I read that it has for others the highly modded royal will be sporting a darksider tire by mid spring after I have burned off her brand new metzler 880
so in the next 6 months or so you can look forward to pics of that
till then I am purchasing the darkside tire for the intruder this Friday and will hopefully have it on in the next two weeks and photos taken before and after a 500 mile break in

Be glad for the extra drain holes, at least you can get all the oil out, unlike our Harleys, unless we use a scavenger.
Friend of mine put the oil filter relocator on his and went back to stock and removing the exhaust. Reason being, he put
cams and some carb work in it and the empty space where the old filter was drains and has to fill when starting the bike,
leaving no oil pressure for a while. Evidently there are some articles on this, and the cam people told him to go back too.
