I would like to know if you can run a 150-90-15 tire in place of a 170-80-15 on the rear with out any adverse effects of handling. I know this is not your usual question. thanks for any answers.

I'd worry about the weight ratings of the smaller tire.

Yes you can, very little difference in load rating. Tire size is almost exactly the same,so speedo will read the same.
