A 196 width will fit easily.  A 205mm tire will always fit, but may require a bit of fiddling with the drive shaft housing.  It has some play in the 4 nuts holding the housing to the final drive.

Forgot to add, you will need to install the tire deflated and inflate once installed.  With air, even the 195 is too wide to fit.

Although I've owned two great Nomads, I'm now riding a Kaw Concours and VN 900C, both with car tires. Both have Vredestien Comtrac tires, a 175 on the Connie and a 195 on the 900C.
Here in Iowa, there are many roads that turn into gravel and I've spent enough time on them to not be concerned by encountering gravel roads. Fresh, deep gravel moves around a lot like sand, and the broader amount of rubber does make the rear end move around more. There is also a metal grate bridge over the Mississippi that I ride on several times a year, the car tire tends to really move side to side on that bridge. However, it's just a matter of getting used to the additional movement and compensating.

http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/searchTiresBySize.do?sortBy=prca&ar=60&fqs=true&rd=16&sw=false&pgTires=1&cs=195.  Highly rated, at least for cars.  Any opinions out there.
I will go darkside so I don't mean opinions on whether it should be done or not
just on the tire itself.  Thanks.
