Re: triumph thunderbird 1600
Congrats and welcome to our site! Secondly, we need to know you stock or original MT size before we can recommend anything? Thirdly, we are excited to have you here and your decision to try the darkside.

thunderbird
The stock rear is a 200/50 R17. There is very limited space in the swing arm as is so clearance is my concern. After talking to a darkside rider face to face I'm convinced to try it. My friend owns a rocket III and our complain is the same can't keep a rear tire on it. He is an avid rider me I don't get out much so when I do I ride hard. Safety is paramount but the economy makeing us think outside the box. I've never been in the box kinda guy anyways. My buddy is very aprehensive on running flat faced tires he may not be convinced but to each their own. Thank you for your time. Tom

im now on the darkside
205 50 r17. Got a good used tire just to see if it fit it did so since there is very few rideing days left gonna run this but come spring a new ct will be mounted. When I took my first ride I adjusted pressure right after bumped up to 45 probably work my way down from there. On the ride home I figured all or nothing so I rode like I did with bt. Bike is heavier going into corners but once I break the plain does verry well it does find the ridges in the road. But I think once I get used to the feel of it it won't be an issue. Very small price to pay on account of savings and I am convinced that safety wasn't compromised. Adjusting riding style is a lot like when I went from a sports bike to a cruiser so I think it will be fine. I do belive the heavyness of the cornering is due to the low profile tire which is unavoidable because of lack of clearance on the swing arm.

I think you are going to like it even more when you get down to the 36-38psi range.

.......GDP here: New member...instead of 205/50/17 on TBird, would there be advantage going down to 195/ 50 or195/55 on Thunderbird?Doc wrote:

195/55 is very close to the same size(height wise) as a 205/50, so you will have more room(side by side) for a 195 than a 205 tire. If the 205 rubs on anything the 195 will most likely clear.

I don't think anybody makes a 195/55/17, I couldn't find any with a quick google search.

195
....you're right: no 195.... so...what's the consensus generally on which brand is the most often used?...The treadin the photos look like a Kumho something or other....Also, how much room between tire and chainguard? Er uh, belt guard on the T Bird?

Re: triumph thunderbird 1600
...TBird:205/45/17.....runs great...with one caveat...it's a smaller circumference so my speedometer is off approximately 10 mph: showing 90, is actually about 80....other than that no problems so far....
