Here is a link that has a 1100 shadow. You can see Tim's bike has a 205/65/15 on it. The 70 is just under 1/2" taller. Still plenty of room.

So no one has tried the 205-70-15 yet I guess. As you can see on my signature, I had the altimax with the 65 height. I will assume then as you said the difference in height will not be a problem. thanks!
p.s. found a guy offering tire change for 20.00. I emailed saying if you take tire off, how about 30? He agreed as long as i have center stand. I asked how about car jack? waiting on reply.

I made one out of old gym equipment parts before I bought my harbor Freight jack. But you couldn't take a wheel off with it; doesn't lift high enough.

sure will Darkshadow. Should get it installed next weekend if it arrives by then. Found a guy not too far away for 30 bucks, said he has a center stand for cruisers.

Ok, rode about 70 miles after install and it's great! Big, beafy treads screaming " don't change me for years!" revs a little lower, about 5 mph, very smooth, softer even though I still had a good amount of rubber on mt tire. I left mt for Installer who will try and sell it on C/L! Altimax rt 205-70-15 seated without a hitch, just a couple of times with letting air out, then filling up again for all sides to pop. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!

loved my 205. Great interstate tire. It'll last a LONG time. Be sure to grease the splines at 15k.

I've got about 1500 miles on this tire and love it. Strange, but even going very slowing, turns in parking lot I notice no difference between mt tire. My other altimax 205-65-15 was a little shorter and I did feel a little different with the slow turns, but not very bothersome.

It sounds like I'll go ahead and go with the 205/7- 15 then. I was speculating what size to go with. Now I can lower my RPMs somewhat out on the interstate with a little bigger diameter! The Altimax looks like a good choice too, unless I find a Michelin cheaper, which is doubtful. Maybe go with a used one? Anyone go that route? Atleast there wouldn't be any breaking-in with a used one.

I certainly agree with the not going with a used tire part of this but "radials are known to blow out if ran backwards"?? I would love to see some more information on this. Non directional radial tire rotation comes to mind right off hand and I have never heard of this manufacturer recommended procedure result in firey death spirals Shocked

Back when I was a service manager for a used car dealership we had a lot of tire failures. Mostly they were happening within the 90 day warranty period.

I started tracking which cars were having them and found it was mostly cars that we had put used tires on. It was common practice for us to take fairly new tires off cars that we were taking to auction and save them later use if we bought or traded a car that we were going to put on the lot and it had marginal tires. Lots of dealers do this and we were no different. The guy I worked for's motto was save a buck where ever you can.

Needless to say, customers that had a catastrophic tire failure weren't happy customers.

I asked a couple of tire dealers what could be causing this and the consensus was this: As a tire, especially a steel belted radial, goes down the road there is a bit of "squirming". Over time, the tire compensates for this and all is well. If you change the direction of the rotation, the squirming is now reversed and can cause separation of the belts in the tire. This causes the tire to self destruct. Once we started marking tires with the position they were in when they came off the donor car, the problem stopped.

Now this is information from a long time ago. Back in the late 70's and early 80's, when radial tires were somewhat new technology. They have gotten much better at manufacturing them and I doubt that changing direction is still the problem it once was, but I still never swap sides when rotating tires, just switch then front-to-back.

anyone try 205-70-15? Empty tire blowout

Post  lj birdman Mon Jun 27, 2011 1:57 pm

thank you for backing up radials run backwards can blow out.. if you look at a tire closly you can tell the direction it was traveling..most tires creat a high spot on the tread which will always face the torward the direction it travels if you look at the top off the tire on your car or truck. the high spot might look like a small ramp and your bike can only go over the ramp one direction hence the direction the tire turned ..just check your car an see thumbup 2cents

What kind of bike do you have Maurice? Did you have to do any tricks to get the tire to squeeze past the final gear drive???
