Best tire to change gearing?
I'm going tothe Dark Side as soon as my Metzler wears out (could be this summer) and just wondering what C/T would be the best to lower my RPMs out on the highway. My bike ('96 1100 Shadow) being a drive shaft bike, I am not able to just change a sprocket to change the gearing. So, I'm interested in a higher tire ont he back to do it. Any suggestions? Just as long as it clears the fender while I'm riding. I'm not concerned about the change in the height of the bike. I just want less RPMs. Thanks!! PD

The report is that going to a 70 series tire lowered the RPM's on my 1300 by 200, at 70 MPH.

Re: Best tire to change gearing?
When you do the math, a 205 65 is about as tall as the 165 80.
But it has been my experience that the above is all theoretical. Actually my 185 65 is nearly identical in height to my old 205 65...or maybe it was a little worn, but nonetheless, the height was very close.
We also did some math on revolutions per tire for a 185 65 and a 205 65. The number of tire revolutions was so close i'd doubt if it would affect rpms.
a 205 65 should reduce your rpms....so if that's the goal, go for it. Or the 165 80. But don't expect anything major. The Spirit is geared a bit higher than the saber. Just be glad you don't have that engine!
