Post  BigBen Mon Apr 20, 2009 10:40 pm

Hey Guys I'm new to the Shadow side, But I had a M50 Limited with a C/T... Crying or Very sad Long story short divorce, Wife took the bike. Crying or Very sad . But I just got ownership of an 1986 VT 1100 with 23k org. miles. It needs a little work, but she runs... I am wanting to run a C/T on the Shadow. Alot of treads have said 165/80r 15, has anyone ran a larger size on a '85 or '86 model ? Asking because the first 2 years of the VT 1100 are more of a standard style ( less front rake) where the 87 - up are more raked out & they have wider rear tires (170). It has a 140/ 90 M/T on it now. I ran a 195/ 65r 15 on the M50 in place of the 170/80... It worked great. I like the wide look but, I still like to ride "The Dragon" ( Deals Gap)... I work at a Goodyear store so, I have alot of tires to look at. Also, front tire anyone use a backwards M/T rear for the front ? Thanks for the help in advance...

You will be the first to put a ct on an older VT1100. The 165 ought to work well. I don't think they make a rear car tire the size of our front tires....but I could be wrong. let us know what you find out. I might want to try this!

Congrats! Post some pictures from the side and back when you get a chance. Take some pictures of the clearance and we can tell you if wider will work. But ride on the 165 for awhile and see what you think. Your butt will know you have a different tire. You will "feel" more road. Take it for a spin and do some parking lot MSF course maneuvers to gain some confidence in the tire. Careful with the acceleration from stop. You might expect a burn out, but get a wheelie..... Very Happy You have a lot more grip now.

Yes it was! At the time it was the only tire I knew that would fit such a narrow rim as the 1300 VTX. Hard to believe that was 4 years ago since the first 165 and look where we are now. As far as I know that's the majority reason for the 165 is the VW.
