redistribution of wealth
On my way into a restaurant for lunch yesterday, I passed a homeless man
with a sign that read: "Vote Obama, I need the money."
Once in the restaurant, I saw that my waiter, a fellow in his 20s, had
on a small "Obama 08" pin. I was surprised he would give away his
political affiliation in a service job.
When the bill came, I decided not to give the server his 20% tip. I
explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth
concept. He stood there in a state of semi-disbelief as I told him that
the service I received was fine but that I was going to redistribute his
tip to someone I deemed to be more in need--the homeless fellow outside.
The server angrily stormed off.
I walked outside, gave the homeless guy $6, and told him to thank
Michael, the waiter inside, as I had decided he could use the money more
than the Michael. The homeless man didn't seem to concerned with the
details. He was just glad to get the money.
At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment, I
realized the homeless fellow was pleased to get the money he did not
earn, but the waiter was pretty upset that I gave to someone else the
money he had earned even though the actual recipient deserved it more.
I guess this redistribution of wealth thing is easier to swallow in
concept than in practical application.
And so it goes.

That's a huge understatement.
