New DS tire 225/50/16
Fellow DS'ers
I've been away for some time, but here's something for U.
This weekend I changed my DS and went even wider, from the 205/55/16 to 225/50/16,
without major work on the bike.
In the begining I thought about adjusting the "Horseman's mod", by grinding and welding the
shaftcover instead of hammering it, but I decide to do it different.
To be short, the bike is not completely in line right now, her rear has moved a bit to the right, since there's more space between the tire and the swingarm.
What has been done?
- A spacer, about 1/6 inch was added on the left side
- The brake bracket was grinded about the same size
- The main bold of the brake bracket was shortened a bit
(Hope this will explain a little bit)
Left and right I have left about 1/8 of an inch.
I tried to take pictures but didn't succeed, the space between the tire and the swingarm
could not be seen. I'll try it again 2morrow ehen there's more light.
For now this quickshot.
The tire is an expensive one, A Dunlop 225/50/16 ZR.
Till now cornering is even smoother then with the old one, this tire is more round at the edges.

Interesting looking rear end. Fits well with the overall bike. I like! Congrats on the new mod. You need to give it a name!!!

Re: New DS tire 225/50/16
Thx. sofar guys. I'll think of a name. I'll try to take more and better pic's late in the afternoon. Hope to reach home before sunset, otherwise the pic's won't do any good since I want you to show the tiny space between the tire and the swingarm. Will be difficult to get this shot anyway.
Twin, I just moved, but she will be visiting 2morrow when the wife is away, so you and I might be lucky.

Re: New DS tire 225/50/16
Allright guys, below some pics of the bike and 2 of the space between the tire and the swingarm.
As you can see, it's tight, but sofar so good, tested it out but will let you know more after next weekend.
The tire is the Dunlop 225/50/16 ZR, expensive compared to other brands but I don't regret it, since she's handling / cornering more easier then the old 205 I had.
Any questions, let me know.
Regarding a name for this mod? Simply Carib's Mod will do I guess.

is that an 1800 wheel?
New here, found from a thread on VTXOA, best link on the whole site. I am in the process of putting a bike together and saw horsemens post somewher with the 215 mod, Anyways, I am going to use a 1800C wheel(foots) and was wondering how wide of tire i could use on a stock 1800C wheel. The 225 looks great. I am physched that it should work. Thanks for the info.

It is more like
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with axe, bent to fit and paint to match.
Either way Get-r-done.

Re: New DS tire 225/50/16
I do not have to do any swingarm moding, I was just wanting to know what size tire i can get onto the 1800 wheel. My frame is already set for a 250 tire, but being on a budget, I do not want to spend a zillion dollars on an aftermarket wheel. I was just planning a 205, then i remembered about the 215 and couldnt recall if it was on a 1300 or 1800 wheel, which is how I showed up here. I think the 225 is going to be the cats ass. I post some pics as time goes on. Thanks again for the info

Re: New DS tire 225/50/16
Rigid, You're alread set-up allright, great, no worries about that.
When I was working on the rear, it even crossed my mind to go with a 245, but this would have
been too much of trouble I guess. I was thinking about the horeman's mod combined with my own,
but from 225 to 245 is a lot and in fact too much.
Besides I think 225 on the 1800 rim is the max.
Personally I like the rims of the 1800 C. Not too shiny and affordable.
You could always decide to make it wider.
Would love to see the pic's when you're ready, so keep us informed.

Re: New DS tire 225/50/16
yes a 225 would look great and after a year or so you might try a 235.
just as long as your custom frame and fender would handle it I say go for it.
just wanted to know what is the rake going to be?

Re: New DS tire 225/50/16
I think the 225 is as wide as I want to go, like i said aftermarket wheels are expensive and the 225 haveing a flatter profile looks wide. The frame was built for up to a 250 MC tire. 4" stretch in the downtubes, 2" stretch in tthe backbone and a 40 deg rake, same dimensions as the orginal WCC CFL frame with 2 deg more rake. I am starting to put it together in my spare time, my rideable date is April 1st, any sooner and i woul probably need a studded snow tire to get around. Being gone all week and having to fit everything into weekends is a chore, but being bikeless this summer is lighting a fire under my ass.
