Has anyone tried to turn your rim down to make it easier to seat a tire ?

NO NO NO, do not screw with the rim, I have a screwed up right wrist because of a messed with rim. Went to mount a tire, and when I went to air it up the tire blew off the rim and I was left with 15 fractured bones in my hand and 1broken bone in my arm just above my hand. People forget that it's lbs. per sq in. when you air up tires.

I should have been more specific,  that part of the rim , inboard section, the bead rests on. That part of the rim the diameter is measured from. Not the outside diameter overall. Anyone done this ?

If you mean the 'safety bead', definitely not. Yes, it makes it a bit mor difficult to seat the tire, but it also keeps the tire from unseating with a hard side blow or if too low a tire pressure. If it comes unseated, you will crash if you are in a corner and have great difficulty maintaining control.
