The only thing holding me back from being a DS rider is the opinions on if a blow out happens with a CT. One of the claims is that the side walls on MT are stronger then that of a CT, as such if a blow out is experienced at speed - let's say 60+ MPH - that the MT will hold up until about 30 MPH where as a CT will not.

I don't know but I would like to know without experiencing it myself.

Tell me your experiences so I can save money...

I have ridden - albeit not very long - a VTX 1800 N running the hydro edge and have no issues with the different handling characteristics of the CT, please don't flame my as a hater - I am not - I just want more experienced information...

This is my second ct. I rode one on my 1300 and I have one on my 1800C. I will never go back to an mt. When I bought the 1800 I had a ct on it before the bike hit 1,000 miles. I gave the mt to a buddy. As far as a blow out ... it took 90 psi to seat this ct ... a lot less for an mt. I had a friend named Wayne that rode a Harley. He had a blow out on an mt ... the tire rolled off the rim and through him into a tree. I lost a good friend that day. Would a ct have done the same thing???? In my mind ... no ... but you never know.

I've had a blowout on a bike tire, tubed, at about 60 MPH and had full control till I stopped, then I couldn't move the bike without help, as the sidewalls and tread move around so much it kept sticking between rim and frame. I was aware enough to just use front brakes to slow down and was thankfully on a 2 lane road with no traffic. This was a 6" gash in the middle of the tread.

However, the sidewalls on my Verdistein is certainly as stiff as a bike tire, so I'd expect the same. I'd not expect as much support on some of the weaker sidewalls and will always look for a stiff sidewall car tire to put on the bikes.

Any thing can happen in a blow out.....depends on the rider experience, whether you are in a curve, how fast you are traveling! It a risk you take with either MT or CT. Heck I am more worried about getting pulled in front of or run over more than having a flat. JMO This happens more than anything to hurt and kill motorcycle riders!

In all my many months on the DS forums, I can't recall a single blowout. That's a thing of the past. I haven't heard a CT blow out in maybe 30 years or more; used to be common when I was a kid in the '50s.

Most car tire blow outs now days are from running way underinflated. The side wall gets hot and it blows.

I had a Blowout on a MT damn near Got me and My GF Killed. Switched to a Dunlop winter sport Run Flat CT. I dont think that will happen with a run flat CT. 2K Miles and Love it will never go back. This 175/60r/16 rides so good I cant tell the difference once i lowered the PSI to 34 cold. Ive been scrapin foot boards and the tire is great. Go Darksiders
