Chirping sound
OK, spring is long gone but about 3 weeks ago I started hearing a kind of chirping sound from the left front of my 1300 S. I had just recently added some WalMart driving lights so I just assumed they were the source. Cleaning up the bike this past Saturday the vacuum hose on the pet cock came lose and I just put it back onto the nipple. Well this afternoon I finally got a chance to take a close look at the lights, I removed them and went for a short ride and the noise was still there. So I started looking for anything loose, checked all the covers, plug wires, etc. etc. and could not see anything wrong. I was about to start just trying to tighted every screw and bolt when I ran my hand along the back side of the aformentioned vacuum hose. There were 3 short very small cracks in the hose along the back side where you could not see them. I was able to pull the hose and trim about 1/4" off and slip it back into place. Another short ride and the noise is history, also the slight rough idle that I just figured was due to temps dropping had smoothed right out. I guess the moral is to keep a very close check on those vacuum lines, I haven't had the tank off or done anything in that area at all in several months so I guess this falls under normal wear.
Keep it in mind,
Dave

Re: Chirping sound
My vent hose on the tank cracked and I had to trim an inch or so to get to good rubber. Sounds similar.
Re: Chirping sound
Obviously your pipes are not loud enough
Good catch though.

How old were your bikes when this happened?
As regular maint. I'll replace mine every 5 years.

Re: Chirping sound
Hmm, now I gotta go tell my wife that you're supposed to replace your bike every 5 years, She thinks as long as it still runs I can just paint it again and keep riding.

Re: Chirping sound
I thought changing the paint qualified as a new bike But really the bike is only 18 months old with something over 11k miles. Maybe its the humidity here in Carolina.
