how to check for clearance
If you are going to try and switch to a wider tire or a little taller tire then you have now and want to see if it will fit without mods try this.
Measure your tire that is on your bike (twice just to be sure) and then subtract that number from the height of the new tire you want to buy (you can get the specs from Tire Rack , Tires over 26.6" not recommended ) then divide by 2 (top and bottom) and make a mold the height and width so the top of your old tire is now the same as the tire you are looking to buy and about an inch wide out of kids modeling clay (dollar-tree $1.) , press it to your tire, get on your bike, and your wife on the back and roll it back and forth , make sure you don't run over the clay you are just checking for clearance , then if that has no marks from the fender or any other metal sticking out down there then put it onto the area closest to making contact with the frame ( fender well frame ) and both of you get back on and jump up and down, then check again to see if the clay is distorted . If no distortion then you can get the tire and see if it works .
Note: Tires 26.1" tall and over might have grinding to do.
this picture is just an example and the clay is not as wide as a real tire
good luck,
