Front Tire used?????

Post  parttimr on Wed Sep 30, 2009 5:21 am

Ok. Decided in the winter mod mode and after 13800 miles on original dunnies to go with the GY TT 205/70/15 on the ole girl. Changing the neck bearings and going with the progressive shocks also. Was just wondering what most are running on the front for a good combo with this rear tire. Thanks in advance.Hopefully I won't go up in flames. affraid

What bike are you riding? I am running the Elite 3 on mine now. I am going to put a rear on the front next go around. I do like the E3 though.

ME 880 up front for me. It's the only front tire for any of my bikes.

I've been using Bridgestone Exedra's, because I didn't know any better. When I replaced my front tire last time, I strongly considered the Metzeler ME880, but decided against it because of the price alone. From what I've read since then, the Metzeler will even out in cost, with longer tread life, and is just an all around better tire.

The Bridgestone's are alright for the money I suppose. My last one went 16k miles before replacement, although the sides wore out before the middle. I actually really pushed that tire to get the 16k, since the tread depth in the middle was still good. My biggest complaint about those tires is that the grooves in the tread are spaced so far apart, once the tire starts to scallop from wear, it causes a vibration while cornering.

All this talk of double darksiding lately, has convinced me to try out a rear tire on the front next time. I'm planning on getting an ME880 140/80 17 rear tire for my front. Unfortunately, I've probably got another 10k miles left in my current Exedra before I give that a shot.

16k on a front tire to me is a lot. 15k was the best I ever got. my stock duncrap got 6,000.
Twin uses Bridgestone for his front tire and swears they are the best.
It is totally a riders choice on tread pattern.

I've seen a number of reviews reporting over 20k miles on ME880 fronts. I think I saw one guy say he got 24k out of one and according to him it wasn't extremely bald when he replaced it.

Were you down to the wear bars with the Dunlop after only 6k? I've heard alot of complaints about Dunlop, but wasn't aware that they wore out so rapidly.

I kinda thought the Metz was going to be the majority but had to ask. Some folks still find it hard to believe what I got out of the original Dunlops but guess I was lucky. Thanks for the replies. Got lots to do this winter.
