Royal Star - Vredestein tires? 185's? Empty Royal Star - Vredestein tires? 185's?

For a Royal Star, there is a 165/80-15 made by federal
https://www.tiresbyweb.com/p-8453-multi-mile-classic-all-season-tires.aspx $100

There is also a Vredestein 185/70HR15 Sprint Classic for $150 on ebay. Anyone tried a Vredestein tire?

Book says to use the 165/80-15, but experience says a 185/70 would work just fine. Not sure if there would be a fit issue. it's a little shorter, and a bit wider.

Anyone tried a 185 on the Royal Star?

Found a Royal Star forum to answer the size question, but thought I'd let folks know that I tried the Vredstein. Sidewall blew somewhere between 80 and 100 psi. I "might" try this tire again but use a tube to reinforce it.

My Vredestein 175 has endured massive torture in twisties, pulling a loaded wagon the the ol' lady in back and the bags and rack loaded to the hilt - throwin' sparks in every sweeper, passing other bikes (even with the trailer) and generally working it to the death of several bike tires. Can't say as I've had a single problem with it, and now in the 19K range, it's FINALLY nearing the wear bars. Next tire is an Austone I was given by a member. I've heard it's even better. Hm.

What PSI did you put in the Vredstein to get the bead to seal? I was disappointed that it blew. It looked like a REALLY good tire for the RSTD.

Mine seated at 90 I think, maybe less; I forget. One thing I recommend is to use tire lube, tire shine (is usually silicone), silicone spray, or WD40 on the beads. (WD is NOT a lubricant, but will temporarily make things slip. NO people, it is NOT a good lubricant!!!) Dish soap has been used. You DON'T want to use certain petroleum based lubes on the tire because greases can eat rubber...or degrade it or whatever...but something BAD, I recall. Shrug
When I took the Vred off my spoked rim and put it on my new FatBoy wheels, (using just tire irons) it beaded at about 30 lbs. - so I guess it's just a matter of the type/shape of bead you have. If a sidewall blew out, well, just how much pressure did you have in that thing? hmmm

Somewhere between 90 and 100. I was disappointed that it blew. Really looked like a good tire. Think I need to clean the rim better next time.

What a shame - I'd be buying another if they were still available, but have the Austone hanging around waiting it's turn.
