195/55 - 175/60 Difference Empty 195/55 - 175/60 Difference

What is the difference between a Michelin Primacy Alpine 195/55-R16 and a Dunlop 175/60-R16 Run Flat? Are the differences significant? Why? I ride an '08 GL1800. I'm a recovering Harley rider and have been riding my Wing a little over two years. Sometimes I miss my Road King, most of the time I don't. It has been an interesting and expensive transition. It is my intention to go Darkside next tire change. Thanks for helping the noobie.

With a 195 tire you may feel the crossover more after the road gets to the fun stuff, it may take more muscle to make the bike turn. The 175/60 will be about 2/10" shorter that the 195/55 tire. Don't be shy about a 175 wide tire, it will give you more traction than any motorcycle tire will give you. My bike came with the Dunlap 180/70-16 E3 and I use to get around 8 to 10k miles out of that tire. Now I'm running a 175/75-16 and have over 23k miles on it and I think I'll get 10 to 15k more miles out of it.

Does the smaller tire effect the speedometer? If so, how? It seems that my speedometer differs about 4 mph with a GPS reading. My speedometer says I'm going faster than I really am. That is probably a good thing.

On a Wing I think the speed-o is run off the out put shaft , so you have to know how tall the "stock" rear tire is for your bike. Then you can figure out how your new tire will affect the speed-o.

Rod, I barely speak English. You speak in tongues. I have no clue how to do whatever you are talking about. My rear tire is a Dunlop 180/60-R15.

195/55 - 175/60 Difference Empty 195/55R16

There are many posts on this size (195/55R16) being correct for the GL1800. Look at my posts on my experience with this size. The bottom line is if you have a separate GPS you can deal with any variance in MPH.

With that said - so far - I am very happy with the switch. If you have a couple of c-notes you can experiment and find out for yourself.

Once you transition to a CT and understand the differences you can ride the crap out-of-it. I am very happy.

If you ride a true sport bike, I recommend caution - rolling over 40 (well 50) degrees MAY present a problem with grip as a contact patch is greatly reduced on a CT. But I have heard "not that much". No idea what that means.

If the longevity is anything like I have heard, I am CT on the back forever. The "bump" performance is way beyond "everything".

I don't remember for sure, but either 08 or 09 was the year that Honda fixed the speedometer error. They were all fast until that year. My 04 Goldwing was 8% fast, so I ran a 195/65/16 to correct it. they are hard to find now, but I like the 195/60/16 as a second choice. Wallacem
