vtx dark side splines
Ok Ive seen on many threads that folks mention "lub the splines every 10k" ... why ?
Does riding dark adversely effect the shaft drive ? I usually do the shaft oil every 6k, but just wondering .....

Re: vtx dark side splines
When ever you change a tire on a shaft drive bike the splines are cleaned and re lubed with moly paste. That is usually every 10 - 15k when your tire wears out. Best i ever got out of my rears was a metzler ME 880 and was about 13k on my 1800. Since my GYTT now has about 14k on it I am going to pull my rear tire and lube the splines. My GYTT is no where near ready to be changed it has at least another 20k+ left of riding left but I don't want to run the wheel that long and many miles without cleaning and lubing the spline.

I see....I looked it up in the VTX service manual that I have. I never realized that they were supposed to do this at each tire change. I am skeptical though. I wonder if the dealerships or independent actually do that ....

Dealer
My local Honda dealer (Sunsports) wouldn't even order the moly paste. The service department just uses grease which is inferior. Use extreme caution when going to your local dealer and ask questions!

Re: vtx dark side splines
I have a '98 VT1100-T and I lube the splines with the good Honda moly paste when ever I take the rear wheel off. Sometimes its 28k miles(when the tire wears out) or less miles because I got a flat and I had to take the wheel off to fix the flat. I have a little over 80k miles on my bike and I see no wear on the splines.
