Going to change my tire

Post  Russ Ithaca VTX on Thu Jan 24, 2013 8:33 am

Howdy!

I currently have a Michelin HydroEdge 205-60-16 on my 2003 1800c. I don't put on a huge amount of miles every year so I've had this same tire on for about 6 years. Thread-wise it could go another 6 years but I think the rubber is getting hard, if you know what I mean? In any case, I'll replace with new rubber very soon. I'm shopping and looking for suggestions.

Originally when I put my tire on, it rubbed on something under the d=fender. I did the usual filing, cutting and trimming to make sure it would clear but I believe I still have a very slight rubbing issue. This made me consider switching to a 195-60-16, yet when I looked for options in that size, the choices were slim. None of the options had a tread pattern like the HydroEdge.

Obviously I've been very pleased with the HydroEdge and looking for something similar in a 195 size. Any suggestions?

Some on ebay. This one looks cool. And it's a single, so you can get a good deal on a performance tire.

Have not tried it, but all of the 195/60-16 tires looked pretty plain. Loved the hydroedge.

At least that tread looks aggressive. I agree, everything else out there in the 195 size is wimpy! Thanks for the link.

There were a lot of other tires if you look at discount tires, tirerack and such. But nothing with any really good looking tread patterns. I prefer a nice tread pattern since the tires on my bike are highly visible. Doesn't make sense to have a bunch of chrome and cool paint....then have this family tire on the back end. I've had family tires (kumho) and they were outstanding tires. But, I have a michelin hydroedge now. It has a pretty cool pattern AND is a great tire. So, given the choice, I'll choose a cool tread pattern every time.

I've had luck with tires on ebay. Especially the singletons. Get them cheaper. Just ask for the date of mfg to be sure it's not an old tire.

Lastly, don't be too afraid of trying a new tire. I've had a couple of failures. But more successes. still the cost of tires has been much less than what I'd pay for in mc tires. AND I enjoy the traction of car tires.

Good luck!
