Uneven front tire wear with 205 rear

Post  Shockwave on Tue Dec 04, 2012 12:05 am

Hey everyone. Hadn't checked in for a while. Hope everyone is doing great.
Got a quick question for those with wide rear tires.
I've been running a 205/50R17 (2nd tire) on my 08 NightTrain for about 50K miles now and have noticed slightly accelerated wear on the right side of the front tire.
I have gone through 3 fronts with the same condition. They were 3 different brands but all did the same thing. Not much more accelerated, just slightly.
I'm just curious if it is a result of compensating for the tendency of the bike to lean right on the road crown due to the width of the rear and the relative wide, flat contact patch and if anyone else has run into this with a somewhat wide rear tire.

just so that I'm not confused, which is right and which is left

when you ride on the right hand side of road, accelerated left side tire wear is normal and vice versa in countries where you ride on the other side

yes, right side wear in the US would be abnormal, the accelerated wear is not due to crown of road, but rather left hand turns on the outside of the curve are longer than the righthand turn coming from the opposite direction on the inside of the curve, you spend more time leaned over in left hand turns

this website goes into better detail explaing than I can

I've never bought in to the road crown theory...
If the crown of the road is responsible then why do only some bikes have uneven tire wear?
Wouldn't all bikes have this problem? Shrug

I've always suspected it is an alignment problem with the front forks and axle. hmmm

My thought was why doesn't the rear tire wear on the left.
I check/adjust the forks with each tire change.

crown of road would have to be much steeper than they are,

as I said in my previous post, uneven tire wear is due to longer curves in the side of the road you ride on

why do some bikes experience it an not others, is more a matter of the rider and how aggressive he corners and how curvey the roads are

any alignment problem severe enuf to cause accelerated uneven wear would be easily noticed in handling
