Greetings fellow DS-ers! I joined the fray a couple of weeks ago and am enjoying the ride. I'm having a rub issue, but first, the specifics:

Bike: 2002 1800C
CT: Michelin HE 205/65/16
Pressure: 38 psi
Shock preset: 2
Riders: 1up most times.. and I'm big (315)

Rubbing on both sides of tire inside the fender. I've been reading that I should try to increase the shock to 5, but that also the GYTT in the same size hasn't had any rub issues. I've considered swapping to the GYTT, or even breaking out the grinder and shaving off some of the tabs inside the fender.

I have further been shopping around for a skinnier tire, maybe something in a 195. Any recommendations for that size?

The Triple Tred doesn't come in a 65 series, it is a 60 series tire which is shorter.
Increasing your shock preload will make the compression a bit stiffer. That might help your rubbing issue if it is hitting the bumps that causes the rubbing.
The tabs hold your tail light and turn signal wires in place.
Have you considered a taller shock? You are a big guy and it probably wouldn't hurt.

First, thank you so much for the quick reply! I saw that the Potenza G019 comes in a 195/55R16, and has got good reviews on this board. Shorter and skinnier. It would also seem that the rubbing is more pronouced on one side than the other, but it does rub on both. Tried pushing preload to 5, but it didn't work. I smelled burning rubber at every stop. As for the shocks, I've thought about replacing them with some Progressive 412s I found on eBay. 12.5". Not sure how big the stock shocks are. But, I also have almost 75k miles on the bike, too. I'm the third owner. Wondering if the shocks just need to be replaced, anyway.

What is your opinion on the Progressive 412 or the 430? Has anyone ever heard of them? Can you recommend another type?

I had 440's on my VTX and they were a huge improvement over the stock shocks.
