Tubes Empty Tubes

Post  Steve-O Mon Apr 16, 2012 10:31 am

Used a tube this weekend in a Kumho. Had a tire blow, so thought to use a tube to reinforce things. After installing, I thought this might not be a bad idea to do all the time. It gives a dry place for dynabeads when you first install. Meaning the tire can be wet from lubing it up and dynabeads like dry places. The tube also seemed to help push the tire out rather than up when trying to bead it.

Anyone else have some thoughts on using Tubes even in tubeless tires?

I know that a few Darksiders that have choosen to not seal their spokes, are using a tube with a tubeless car tire.
Works great for them. thumbup

Good thought on isolating the beads from tire lube.

Someone posted this on the royal star forum:
Q: I have been told not to install a tube into a radial tire, but no one knows why. Can you tell me if it is not good practice to install a tube in a radial tire?
A: It is a bad idea to put a tube into any tubeless tire. Tubeless tires have a considerably more robust construction than tube tires, which need the help of a tube of air to maintain sidewall stability and air pressure.
If we put a tube into a tubeless tire, there will be huge amounts of friction between the side of the tube and the inner liner of the tire. With every rotation, the sidewall will flex and rub against the tube. Friction equals heat. Heat is the ultimate enemy of tires, especially sidewalls. They are the weakest point of construction. Eventually the result will be BANG!

I'm not sure I follow this logic. We use tubes with spoke rims all the time. And if tubes help weak sidewall tires, seems the friction would cause those to blow first..... I 'm not buying it... Other thing is that the air circulation down there is considerable. I'd be surprised if there was any harmful heat build up.

.....but I WILL be touching my tire on long trips to see if there is any noticeable heat problem.

I have in the past run tubes in several tubeless tires on 4x4's and never had a problem, therefore my experience tells me it doesn't matter Shrug Shrug

I haul farm equipment and tow large machines with tube tires that are not made for speed. It takes tremendous heat for a tire to fail. They have to be so hot you can't touch them. The only way to attain that kind of heat on a bike tire would be to run it severely low on pressure. Properly inflated it will not heat up anywhere near enough to disintegrate. It don't matter if you have a tube or not if you run on a low tire it will eventually heat to the point of failure on any vehicle.

I can't believe how much misinformation there is out there.
You can run a tube in a tubeless tire but you should not run a tube type tire without one.
