a couple more oh shit moments
In the last 2 days I have had 2 very distinct oh shitters. This will not include the ride home Christmas night with no low beam lights. That was not an oh shitter, just a different kind of cool ride.
I will copy paste and edit my Facebook posts to accommodate getting this posted and trying to get a little sleep before I head back to work
Rolling home night before last enjoying the brisk winter weather, what started out as a clear night started to drop minute amount or moisture, this mist turned to a light sleet.
Coming through the last curves into Westfield I had the Mistress laid over pretty good digging through and enjoying the rush. As I'm exiting the curve there is a car about 1/8 mile ahead .. My need for speed bit me and I decided to catch and pass the car before getting into town. I hammered down and caught it. just as I jumped into the other lane to complete the pass, the car jumped on the brakes hard.... thinking what the hell ???? Then instantly thinking OH SHIT ... I saw all the deer scattered across the road and all through the ditches on both sides. I know there were at least 8 and here I am pushing triple digits. Only one option at this point ... twist that throttle and point the fat girl where I saw an opening ...... Good news ..... I made it unscathed. Piloting a well tuned good handling machine like that with the nimbleness needed to get through those pucker moments is an exhilarating experience. The rest of the ride was ???????........ boring after that. now a shower and a change of shorts are in order ..... see you out there
this morning
The white stuff is falling, the local roads are covered ..... I am pretty sure it will melt off by the time I get off work, but I have to make it there first .... I am actually thinking I will take the truck this morning, ....... or will I? I will let ya know how the ride is:)
after arriving at work
Exhilarating, challenging but totally worth it .... First mile I actually was looking for a place to turn around ... Once I hit the newer black top I had a track to run in ..... That's all I needed see you out there
the rest of that story
A little nutty? Probably have to be to get on the bike and start the 50 mile commute in the snow. The snowy slushy part of the ride was actually Fun, yes with a capitol F. Challenging, exhilarating and totally fun. The scary part did not come until I was within about a 1/4 mile from my exit off US36. Cruising along at about 60ish .. minimal slush, wet roads but totally doable. Cruising along and I see a car jump out from behind a semi coming at me about a quarter mile or less away. I automatically let off the throttle and started flashing bright dim bright dimbrightdim ... he keeps coming. I get hard on the binders and head to the side of the road. I am literally straddling the white line feet firmly planted ready to bail when this ass hat finally starts to ease back over in front of the truck. As he passed me I could not fully extend the left arm that was giving him a one fingered salute for fear of him taking my arm off. I can tell you that the dead beat prick had blue eyes it was that close. If it had not been for the trucker getting on his brakes to make room this could of had a different outcome.
I read on a forum that motorcycling brings hours and hours of total pleasure interrupted by moments of stark fear .... I had my moment today!!! See you out there
Why do I do it? If you don't know by now you never will, There is no why. It just has to be this way, it is who I have become what I am.
See you out there

Re: a couple more oh shit moments
Back in my trucking days, we used to say that trucking was "endless hours of boredom occasionally punctuated by seconds of sheer terror".
