tire wear patterns

Post  coldweatherfreak on Tue Sep 27, 2011 9:23 am

I'm finally noticing wear to begin in my rear tire and its surprisingly uneven something I've never seen on a rear tire before, scalloping, high spots & low spots, similar to what you see sometimes on front motorcycle tires

the first 10k, I experimented with psi, running as high as 45 in the beginning, and as low as 25 (only for 1000 or so miles @ 25) and finally found the psi I like for ease of countersteer @ 36 for the last 1k or so, I have 11k now on the tire, and very noticable wear beginning in the last 500 ro so miles.

I upgraded my suspension about 6000 miles ago, everything is new top notch WP Suspension, both front and rear.

fwiw, the suspension has prolly made my riding a little, ok, a LOT more aggressive,

tire is a General Altimax Artic 205/50-17 (intended for a 5-7 wheel width) on a 4" wheel, its a deep lug winter tread with a lot of sipes

anybody else notice irregular wear patterns

I've never heard of scalloping with a car tire. I have seen scalloping with a MT
on the rear and believe that it was do to being run underinflated. Shrug

Can't tell anything from your pics, but after 11,000 is the tire wearing evenly across
except for the scalloped areas, or is it mostly wearing on the edge?

I've never had a rear tire scallop before, only fronts

the wear is pretty even across, scallopiong is only slight with high & low spots in the central area of the tread, I say onlyu slight, it's barley perceptible

what are you doing for balancing? I attribute the even tire wear on my front tire to dynabeads. No empirical evidence to support my hypothesis but I am sticking to it anyway...

dealer balanced it with a spin balancer, its the most balanced tire I've ever had mounted, it was almost perfect without weights, lemme go look, but iirc it only required 1 5gram weight to balance, mud & stones in the tread might throw it out

re tire wear patterns

I think it is just characteristics of the particular tire. You may use the same tire again and not see a pattern at all.I had it happen on my old goldwing once but it was on the front.Changed nothing but the tire and never saw it again. Shrug Shrug

that's kinda what I was thinking, the scalloping certainly isn't serious like some front tire scalloping I've seen, hasn't affected handling, I have been tearin up gravel roads lately, some of the regular gravel roads are at flat track pace sliding & spinnin it up around curves

I think the fact that you are running a winter tire, is probably why you are getting the scalping. Winter tires in general (especially ice tires) have a very soft rubber compound.....giving you an excellent softer ride, but the price you pay for that luxury is shorter longevity that a summer tire would give you. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth. Cheers
