Just didnt work out

First of all this not intended to go out as a dis or a dig and I firmly believe in the "to each his own" theory, also I have not lost sight of the fact that this is a very large cruiser and the size and weight put it in a category far from that of a crotch rocket (zoom splat). I am a 45 year old mechanic and have been riding for many years dirt and street. that being said I just wanted to put in my two cents on my personal experience with running a car tire (Goodyear triple tread 205/70 r16) on the rear of a 2002 VTX 1800c.
I realized I was about ready for a rear tire and kept hearing about this "darksider" thing so I spent a considerable amount of time reading all about the subject by people that run them on their VTX's. Shortly after that I was sporting a shiny new GYTT on the rear of my VTX, 2500 miles later it got replaced with a 200/60r16 motorcycle tire and here are the reasons why.
The biggest reason is "flickability" this is a term used allot in dirt biking and basically means rolling out of one corner and bringing the bike over center into the next corner turning the opposite direction, the car tire makes this transition slower. About 75% of my riding is on tight mountain roads living in the Tahoe area. The tire being flat on the bottom means you have to overcome the bike wanting to constantly run on the flat side of the tire. A good example is riding on a heavily crowned road, the tire wants to flatten itself out on the road and consequently pulls to the right so you are fighting keeping the bike in the lane, not to mention uneven pavement.
You can do away with alot of this behavior by reducing the air pressure but then if you lug the bike in a turn the massive torque transmitted to the rear tire bounces it like a beach ball you really don't feel it but the rider behind you is blown away that you are able to hold the turn without washing out.
On open highway and at speed the tire did great but there again start to lean the bike over for a quick lane change and you have to overcome getting the bike up on the edge of the tire and off of the flat section.
I went back to a mc tire and was blown away at how nimble this huge cruiser really is. Again not looking to get flamed as these are just my personal thoughts on the subject.

Wouldn't flame you for your honest opinion. It isn't for everyone, but at least you gave it a try. Give you kudo's for trying and making up your own mind. I have a GYTT and don't have any of the issues you were experiencing on mine and I love it. I live in the Ozark Mountains and ride the twisties all the time. I have an 03 VTX 1800 S and it seems to work for me. Glad you gave it a fair shot and got back to what makes you comfortable on your bike! Have fun ride safe and keep the rubber side down!
