DarkSide Update! - Impressions after 500 Miles

Post  Cage SC on Mon Aug 08, 2011 7:19 am

After breaking in the tire and getting used to things in general, this is my 500 Mile DarkSide update and progress report:

By the way, I posted by first In-Depth report on going DarkSide over a week ago, which for those who missed it can be read in more detail with MANY more photos (including a LOT of folks from here) at this link:

Note: There ARE a lot of photos, so keep that in mind if you are using Dial-Up or a slower DSL internet connection. Shrug

Enjoy!

Yes! Very much so.

I still haven't found that "sweet spot" for the air pressure. But already know that 40 psi ain't it. Shrug

Will be taking a big road trip up into the back hill country of eastern KY and then riding around the Ohio River Valley area all next week. Should get in LOTS of interstate (to and from the area), sweeps and twisties in the Appalachia foothills, city stop and go when we spend a day in Cincinatti and all those farm roads looking for 11 covered bridges my wife wants to find. That should put around 1500 more miles on there if my guess is right.

Looking for to it eat

...and reporting back!

An observation

Post  quadancer on Sat Aug 13, 2011 8:59 pm

Of all the DS tires I've looked at on big cruisers, I notice that most all of us when parked on the kickstand will have some minor flexion on the kickstand side even though no one is on the bike. Mine almost looks like it's low when parked, but normal when up and running. I have 36 lbs solo and also 2up.
All I can guess here is that if you DON'T see any flex in the tire when parked, as an indicator, you may have too much air. This may NOT be a viable indicator if your aspect ratio is low, meaning not much sidewall height on the tire to flex with.

The rest is just the 2 rules we ride with:
1.) if it wallows in the sweepers, it's too low
2.) if it tracks around on grooves, ridges and such, it's too high.
