205/65r/16 hydroedge rubs swing arm.
I have read a few different posts on here experiencing the same problem i am having but have not found a clear answer. I have put about 200 miles on a new hydroedge 205 65r 16 on my 2003 1800r and i noticed today a thin shiny ring on the tire right at the letters. Has anyone found a reason that some rub and some do not? Or a solution other than denting the swingarm? If not a link to the swingarm mod would be appreciated. I am running 44 lbs (its where i started.) will less pressure make it better or worse?

Well I don't have a solution, but not all tires are made the same even between same brands. They all have tolerances to hold to but they aren't built exactly the same and with that the darkside doesn't have much clearance anyway between the swingarm when the do fit.
Sorry it is rubbing.

shave off some of the letters and see if it still rubs? Or easier yet, air it down to 34psi and see if it clears, if not, try out that pressure and then shave some letters off...

If you alter the swingarm in any way, your insurance co won't have to cover you. So many don't realize this, and you have to admit, those cats try to get out of anything they can - I just quit Geico for it - they can keep their friggin' lizzerd.
Oh, and I wasn't altered.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to let some air out and check it again. I really hate the thought of intentionally denting a structural component on purpose but will if I have to.

What would be the harm of just letting it rub???
If it is just the top of the lettering, pretty soon it would solve the problem itself.

re 205/65r/16 hydroedge rubs swing arm
I don't think I would just let it rub, depending on how hard it is rubbing I would be afraid of the extra heat generated.(the not knowing for sure would bother me)My tire has credit card clearance on the shaft tube and never has touched but when I remove it to replace or service I am going to mark and concave the tube 1/4" or less .Don't think it will have any effect on the structural stability.Again,to much information, how would the ins.co. know if you didn't tell them.

That is my exact fear. I'm heading to iowa in a few weeks and don't want a suprise sidewall blow out. I'm ging to stick my driversliscence in the gap and deflate untill it falls out and check pressure

Re: 205/65r/16 hydroedge rubs swing arm.
I put a credit card between the tire and ds tube and aired down. It fell out at 20 psi which obviously wouldn't work so I took the tire off and massaged the tube with half of a tierod with the end still on it. I wrapped it with electrical tape first and it did not hurt the paint. I now have a 16th to an 8th inch clearence which is plenty for me.

Re: 205/65r/16 hydroedge rubs swing arm.
That minor of a dent won't hurt the arm structurally - not a metallurgist, but as a lifetime mechanic and tinkerer, I'd say that any dent over 10 % of the pipe size or where the metal makes more than a 20 degree bend could possibly weaken it.
But I doubt insurance companies can see that straight. Good call with the tape. You often see assemblies where the factory has crimped down a pipe for clearance that has loads applied to it; many of these are in MOTORCYCLE FRAMES!!!
So it's not unusual.
Neither is lack of common sense in America.

Re: 205/65r/16 hydroedge rubs swing arm.
Had some minor rubbing when I was running my Hydroege. My mechanic did a little grinding and lowered the tire pressure to 35 and the problem disappeared.
A bolt near the side took out the tire, and needed a fast replacement, so went to a Goodyear Triple tread. Love it. Went with the 60 series instead of the 65.
I couldn't be happier. I've put 7,000 miles on it so far with no sign of wear.

Don't know much about tech stuff and talk, but is it not possible that your wheel is not
100% centered. And if it's centered, placing it a bit out of the center, will that help?
Reason I ask is because I had the 225 on a 1800 rim on my 1300S. I had to place it a bit
out of the center. It was thight on both sides, but the space was there.
Let me know.
Robert.

Re: 205/65r/16 hydroedge rubs swing arm.
I have the exact same problem with my HE 205-65-16 as well. It only just rubs on the lettering and the tiny "ribs". The amount of rubbing seems to have stopped now after some 600+ miles, but I check it often just to be sure. Maybe next winter I'll take the rear wheel off put a small dent in the swingarm as described above....

Or just ride it a few miles and let it make its own clearance? Had a slight polished ring on my HE side wall for a while. It is gone now but there are 30K miles on the tire too.
