60 or 65?

Post  Toecutter on Fri Apr 22, 2011 10:50 am

I'm going darkside, have read a bunch on different sizes, how-to's, etc.
Question. 205/60/16, and 205/65/16 which, and why?
I've seen people saying they use both.

I have an '04 Vulcan Classic 1600.

I used the 205-60-16 gytt because I liked the tread pattern,the width of the tire and it was available not rocket science I know.Either should work fine ,it is usually only as complicated as you choose to make it. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Hey there "Toecutter";

I would say in regards to your question about either a 60 or a 65,
How is your speedo clocking ? (is it alittle off high or low?)

You will be able to adjust that speedo with choosing either the 60 or 65
profile depending on where your speedo sits and your desired outcome.

For example;
1) A 205/60R16 has a 2050 mm circumference
2) A 205/65R16 has a 2114 mm circumference

Therefore if you wish to attempt to correct an;
Under rated speedo/odom then the bigger circumference would help
Over rated speedo/odom then the smaller circumference would help

If your goal has nothing too do with a speedo correction, then 'ave at er'.

Cheers

You might be overthinking things. hmmm
There is only about a 1/4 inch difference in radius between a 65 and a 60 series tire.
Usually there are no fitment issues between them.
The only reason I can think of to prefer one over the other, is if you have short legs
and want your seat about a 1/2 inch lower. Shrug

Hey there Doc;

I would have to agree with you about the over thinking part somewhat as I have discussed,
tested and played out several long numbers to see the differences in actual equations of
the "before" and "after" types. No, not much of a difference at the end of it all but the
understanding is what's appreciated. I have been able to assist a couple of riders to make
up their minds as to what their options are and they all have been quite appreciative of
the gained knowledge. Things like correcting or closing the gap in speedo/odom differences
are important to some, slightly shorter or slightly higher seat heights are others goals, tire
expansion while driving at highway speeds are a concern of others, I've heard several different
reasons for the desired changes. I guess it all boils down to the rider and the reason, many
different riders many different reasons. It's just nice for some (me included) to truly understand
and know that when you put that tire on your bike that it's the best one for "you".

Cheers
Khuts

Excellent replies gentlemen, I didn't even think of Speedo correction when posted, but sure is something to consider.
