Has anyone tried going Darkside on the Honda ST1300 Pan European?

I've had a Toyo on my Rocket for a few years now, and would fit on to the Honda if I could find one that fitted without fouling anything.

I've got a 2006 ST1300 with 40,000 miles on it... barely broken in. Just bought a Hankook K110 Ventus (205/50ZR/17) two days ago. Now I just have to find a shop that isn't afraid to mount it.

When I go out for a ride a normal day is 400-500 miles. Isn't difficult to plan a trip that will run me out of rubber if I have a 'Stone or Dunlop mounted. Going to the Darkside in order to get away from spending a thousand dollars a year on tires. Also looking forward to being able to run dirt roads in western USA and Canada without worrying about stability and durability.

As soon as I get it mounted and have a few miles I'll send along a report.

Glad to see this forum. The DS topic tends to get heated in most places, and I just don't get that. Who the heck cares if I'm running DS tires if it's my money, my bike, and MY life? For some of the reactions I get you would think I'm holding a gun on the other forum members and telling them they've got to attend my evangelical DS sermons or something. I had to argue with my regular shop about mounting the tire before I bought it. Then got the tire in hand and the dolt backed out of the offer to mount because a couple of tire reps told him he was assuming liablity for MY wreck.... our nation is turning into a bunch of pansies! (And when I mentioned this on my regular forum the thread was deleted and I was warned NOT to say that again... go figure) Gaah

Lee, I feel your pain brother. Most of us here have fought that fight. Just have to love the closed minded masses out there. It is always folks that only ride a couple k a year too. Self professed bike gurus that truly have no clue. But it is due to idiots like that that we have this forum spefically for the darkside. Some of us have been harrassed, threatened with law suits, banned from other boards and generally had folks trying to make life hell. You can't make my life hell .... I am driving this yacht and only I can make it anything but the awesome life it is. Yeah well that's my story Laughing

Can you remove the rear wheel with the bike on center stand? The wings we have the option to lay them on their side and remove the wheel thanks to the lugnut design on them. Should have heard the shit my neighbors were talking while she laid out in the yard for a few hours while I was getting the new meat put on her. Started out concerned that one of the kids had dropped it and left it lay then when they were trying to pick it up they noticed the wheel gone. Comic relief at it's best Laughing Laughing I get my tires mounted at the car tire store where I buy my tires, they cant balance them but that's ok too. As cheap as it is to mount I can balance them else where.

Good luck

Thanks for the comments, Smokey.

As for laying the bike over - That might be a viable option. Don't think any ST owners have tried it though. The center stand isn't quiet high enough to give clearance, even with the lower rear fender removed. Tire is wide enough that both mufflers have to be moved out of the way.

I went to a race car friend of mine (I live in Cabarrus County, NC) this morning and asked if he knew of a shop that could help and he gave me a steer to an old timer that has more common sense than most. Shop's closed today, so I can't find out till Tuesday what will happen, but I suspect he might do the work.

Next thing after the DS rear is to figure out what to do to improve the mileage performance of the front tire. I've been using the Dunlop RoadSmart and getting only about 16,000 or so. I'm pondering that running a Dunlop Elite III on the front will work and give me the mileage I want.

Most of my riding is specific to going from one county seat to another. I'm in the first quarter of a project that is taking me to all 3,059 counties of the lower 48 states to document at least one veterans memorial in each county. Details at www.RideAroundAmerica.com - it takes a lot of coin to keep a bike going for 175,000 miles, so saving a few dollars on tires is important.

Keep it fun ...

I'm very interested with your results. I ran a triple tread on a vtx for a lot of miles & I miss that tire. good luck with it. Now I.m on an st & would love a car tire on it.

170 x.6 = 102mm tall

my V-strom stock size was a 150/70-17 (105mm tall)

I'm running a 205/50-17 (102.5mm tall) designed to run on a 5½"-7½" wide wheel, on my 4"wide V-strom wheel. running 25psi, clears my chain by about 1/8" at best. just replaced the chain, the old one was loose and had sideplay it would rub in some corners. A couple other V-stromers are running 205/55-17s, a bit taller 112.5mm

unfortunately with 17" wheels, just about all care tires are wide or very low profile, there are 185 and 195s in 17" but only 30 or 40 series profile

edit, my DS tire is a 205/50-17 General Altimax Artic. I chose a winter tire cause my DS venture was originaly just an experiment with winter riding

most of the other stomers I know are running a 205/55-17 General Exclaim UHP
