6 degree triple tree on the darkside

Post  army1982 on Thu May 06, 2010 10:05 am

Hi evryone. I'm new to the site and have a couple of questions. I have a 2003 VTX1800C that I want to stretch a little with 6 degree triple trees. I also have been wanting to come to the darkside and have the GYTT waiting in my garage, but I hear that I need to get shorter shocks for safety reasons with the new trees. If I replace the stock shocks with the recommended 10.5 inch shocks will I still be able to use the car tire? Won't it rub too much? Thanks!

You might be on virgin ground here! Not sure on the 1800, but if you do go with the shorter shocks you may have to set the shocks on a stiffer rating to keep from bottoming out any! That's just my educated guess, which as most people know aint worth much............LOL

I hope someone comes along with experience in this to really help you out! Thanks for asking and checking in with us.

Congrats on your choice to try the darkside.

Thanks Bobby. I always try to be different...or should I say Unique ? lol! I just want to be sure I do it as safely as possible and still be able to enjoy the ride. What a concept though... raked just a little and a sweet car tire for traction...it's gonna be a sweet ride if I can make it work. Cool Oh, and I was able to change my shock order to 11.5 inchers. Hopefully this will be ok with the 6 degree trees.

I am the same way, I follow my own road and do my own thing. We may not be in a class all by ourselves, but it don't take long to call roll. LOL

Oh...it should look great! Send pics when done?

I just found an old thread from 2008 from a guy asking how low he can go with progressive shocks and 6 degrees of rake. Looks like it wasn't Virgin after all. No Oh well...at least it isn't like everyone else. Very Happy Be good, but if you can't do that, then Be Good At It! Thanks again.

I have 11.5 progressives on my bike and they work fine with a 70 series tire. But I have a 1300.
Are you using extentions on your forks?

been there, done that. You have plenty of clearance for the recommended tire sizes with the lower shocks. Might have to do a little trimming on the inner fender brace, but it's not a big deal Wink

Yes. I will be using 2 inch extensions. I just want to make sure, because 10.5 inch shocks were recommended, but I don't know if they will allow enough clearance. I saw that 11.5's should work, but am worried about the trail. Thanks for all of your advice guys. I can't wait to get back from Iraq next month and start the mods. It's gonna be SWEET. I'll post some pics when they are done.

Nodak,
For some reason I can't see your pic on this network, although I Love Your Avatar! :cyclops: Could you send me some. I'd love to see what it might look like other than in my mind. I can't wait to get back and start turning wrenches for my Baby...
